Great photos!
The first one in posts no. 2 and 3 are cpt. av. Ion Profir (pilot) and cpt. Eugen Teodoru (observer). They were probably the best crew of the 1942 campaign. Btw, in 1942-early 1943, the 5th Bomber Group did not posses Ju-88A-4s, only He-111H-3s, as seen in one of the photos. The 5th Bomber Group with Ju-88s entered action in August 1943. |

Captain Aviator Ion Profir was a MV Order recipient in 1944. This photo taken in 1942. He must have been one tough guy. Did he survive the war ?

Photo #9 has a photo of Jesus or Saint directly below the center windshields of the plane. "God is my co-pilot".

He was one of the best Romanian bomber pilots. After the 1942-ealry 1943 campaign the command thought his low-visibility flying skills will be more useful in training other pilots and then in the 1st Night Fighter Squadron. So he did not see any combat after that. After the war he managed to escape to Turkey with a Ju-34 loaded with others fleeing the Communist regime. He then moved to Paris where he comitted suicide several years after that. A sad end to a great pilot. |

That is a sad ending to someone who stood out from the rest. I also noticed that while the other pilots and crewmen wore their leather pilots cap, he wore the traditional Romanian black wool hat.

That is not Profir. I said posts no. 2 and 3. He is the guy with the mustache and Teodoru is the guy with the long face.

That particular photo doesn't appear to be a Heinkel He 111. It's possibly a Dornier Do 17, used by Rumanian long-range recce units. Cpt. av. Profir is indeed the guy with the moustache. |
