Mamaia airfield

I checked Google Earth (a fantastic tool, highly recommended) and found for Mamaia a similar satellite photo Mytzu & Carol have posted earlier.


The grey strip is there; however, I don't think it represents a concrete runway, as Mamaia didn't have one during the war, IIRC.

Tip: When searching for targets in Rumania, make sure you type 'Rumania', not 'Romania', as Google Earth would not recognize the latter spelling form.

It appears that Google Earth uses the same database as Google Maps, hence the almost identical images.

In these images concrete appears in all shades from white (e.g., on the runway of Băneasa airport) to black (e.g., on the runway of Henri Coandă airport), grey included. On the other hand, north-west from the grey strip there are large triangular structures with the same colour. As it is highly unlikely that they are concrete 'slabs', maybe the strip is not concrete either.

This is quite odd because the message one receives from Google Maps when trying to search for 'Rumania' is: "We could not understand the location Rumania".

A friend from Constanta went to the old Mamaia airfield and took some pictures, he also found the old hangars which are now used by some company - he made pics with them too.He is waiting confirmation to join this forum so he can post himself about it.He told me the location of the hangars and considering what pilots said - taking off/landing to/fomr the sea and by looking at the maps I first posted, I came with this ideea:

Right now we have "Canalul Dunare-Marea Neagra" going across it, so I think the airfield was closer to the sea:

It is almost overlapping onto the location indicated by Mytzu.

Since the guy who went to the airfield did not received the registration confirmation yet, he asked me to post this:

'Freak', I think you nailed them, as the hangars look indeed as old, W.W. 2-era buildings. Now where are these hangars located on the satellite map?

Take a look on Mytzu's map. On the side of the possible location of the airfield (the yellow rectangle) there is a spot marked "HANGARE".

Someone told me that the old hangars from the hidro-squadron on Suitghiol lake are still there, Freak you think you could find those too and take some pics ? I already owe you some beers for the mamaia Airfield trip :]

Thanks for the dedication Dénes . Here is the possible location of the airfield you mentioned, 35 km NW from Constanţa. Constanţa International airport seen on the right is only 25 km from the city.

Today was not a good day for taking pictures. I've been today all around Constanta helping my dad with work and even up to The Danube Delta and only just arrived from there. But he said he knows where those "hydro" hangars may be. Also on our way North of Dobrogea i've seen some strange hangar-like buildings with a semi-circle shaped rooftop. My father said these are most likely to be older than 40 years, as most of the recent rooftops are triangle shaped or just plain flat. I'll take some pics next time i pass there and that would be wednesday, when we go to the Delta again.
