26 July 1941 - Liberation of Bessarabia

Today is the 63rd anniversary of the liberation of Bessarabia. It's a pity that all the sacrifices made for this day seem to have been in vain.

Let us mark this day as a homage for the Romanian soldiers fallen on the Eastern Front.

The country's borders, cut down a year ago, were reunified by the fearless Romanian soldier. After Bukovina was liberated two weeks ago from under the foreign domination it is only now, a few days later, that the other province Bessarabia comes back to her Motherland.

May this historical hour be ever glorified and let us swear to be worthy of those who gave us the possibility to celebrate such a solemn day of national happiness.

In this battle the whole nation and its sons should be under the Romanian flag, where they are needed, to serve the unanimous will of their nation, that of preserving our borders and of recovering Bessarabia, Bukovina and all the provinces lost by a weak and guilty leadership which was imposed trough several coup d'etats.
The whole nation was overwhelmed by joy when it learned that Cernauti, Kishinev and other towns were liberated. We are going to feel very happy when communiques will inform us about the final liberation of Bessarabia and Bukovina. Our joy and satisfaction will be endless not only for having regained two beautiful provinces but for our glorious Army redressing the disgrace caused by the irresponsible rulers to our country.

It's liberation only to Bessarabian romanians. For russians and ukrainians it is simply occupation. Don't forget this fact.

"Occupation"? Why you said that? After the Dnepr river border you could talk about occupation. Don't you agree?

You probably mean Dniester, not Dnepr. The Dnepr is several hundread kilometers more to the east.

Sorry for that! Anyway, neither Dnepr could bother me!

Who is the officer to the right? He appears to be wearing the Order of Michael the Brave.

Does anyone know if the document refers to the restoration of the Nativity Cathedral in Chişinău?

This is a very odd interpretation of the facts. Its like saying about the US 13 colonies after the independece war that the "americans" were liberated but the englishmen there were ocupied. Since the russians in Bessarabia were sent as a "rulling class" in this teritory it is hard to say that they were ocupied.

Last Sunday marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Chişinău on 16 July 1941.

26 July 1941 - 26 July 2006: 65 years

The commemorative coin below was issued in 1941 to mark the liberation of Bessarabia and Bukovina. It bears the inscription: MOLDOVA LUI STEFAN IN VECI A ROMANIEI (STEPHEN'S MOLDAVIA FOREVER ROMANIA'S).

about 'liberation', depends on what sympathies you have for which side. I am more sympathetic to the Romanian cause against the Soviets, consideirng that the Soviets had aggressed Romania after the Ribbentrop Molotov pact.

A bit late, but I pay my respects to the fallen Romanian soldiers who fought on the Eastern Front.
