What was the name of our writer taken prisoner at Turtucaia in 1916, by the Bulgarians, and then released after the Peace of Bucharest - May 1918?
Is he George Toparceanu? He wrote: "Mearga pictorii la tara, Ca sa moara..." ("Let the painter artists to travel to countryside, To day there...") But I like even more his so-called fables, where he makes a lot of fun. And the novel with "Ciubar Voda"(The Tub King"). This post has been edited by Florin on September 28, 2004 04:08 am |

I think the artist Nicolae Grigorescu not only made the famous paintings with scenes inspired from the Romanian Independence War 1877-1878, but he also took active part in combat in some battles.
Just correct me if I am wrong. |

Liviu Rebreanu was also in the army.
Yes, I know, not the Romanian Army, but the Austro-Hungarian Army. This inspired him for "Padurea Spanzuratilor" /The forest of the hanged men. This post has been edited by Florin on September 28, 2004 04:20 am |

It was Liviu Rebreanu's brother who tried to desert and was hanged. I don't know whether the writer himself was in the army. A lot of other writers were in the army.

This is list made by a friend. It contains some of the books inspired from WWI experiences. Probably all of these writers survived (they wrote the books) His grand father is Ioan Missir. You can find his book on internet in the pdf format. I posted a link somewhere on the forum (i don't know where).

The way I remember it: Yes, his brother was hanged for trying to reach his co-nationals who were fighting with the Austro-Hungarian army, where his brother was enrolled. And Liviu Rebreanu himself was also in the Austro-Hungarian army. This post has been edited by Florin on September 28, 2004 11:14 pm |

Toparceanu is the one taken prisoner at Turtucaia. He wrote two interesting books about the battle and the time he was prisoner: "Amintiri din luptele de la Turtucaia" and "Pirin-Planina".

It seems that Liviu Rebreanu volunteered for service in the Romanian Army during WWI (he settled in Romania in 1910), but his request was denied. |

Ioan Missir's book "Fata Moartă" (Dead Girl) can be found in full at http://sepwww.stanford.edu/sep/nick/ro/fm/fm.php .
Great read and exquisite 1st hand account of the 1st World War (only in Romanian, unfortunately), and it determined me to scan and put online as soon as possible a similar - but ilustrated too! - book written between the wars by a WW I veteran from Oltenia (a great-grandfather of mine is briefly mentioned there too hence my interest in digitizing it). |
