"On 25 August 1941 six TB-3s carrying 12 SPBs(*) flew to the vital Chernovod rail bridge over the Danube in Romania. All 12 SPBs attacked, with two 250 kilogram (551lb) bombs each, bringing down this difficult and distant target."
* SPB's were basic I-16 fighters mounted under the wings of a TB-3 bomber which acted as an "aircraft carrier" - see picture below...

- Who has heard more about this attack? What the entire bridge really destroyed? Howcome the VVS's slow TB-3s were able to penetrate into romanian airspace without being intercepted by ARR? What were the consequences of this attack?

You will find almost all details in Modelism 1/2003. Translate them please for the others if they are interested.
There are also some interesting details in the booklet called Stalins'Eagles in russian and in the magazine Aviatzia i Vremea ( Aviation and Time ).
They stopped traffic for 6 hours over the bridge and the unit ceased to exist after this mission. All pilots were used in the convetional way and one by one lost in action. It was a very heroic story indeed from all points of view. Soviet atackers and Romanian defenders did their best.

Good, but for now you are an archeologist so go find more about that crash site! Your work is interesting and we all want to see what you dig up next. If you find german or russian inscription, take a close up picture and post it here, maybe i or denes can help.
Ask more old people for information, (while they still live), I wish i could do that if I was in romania... have not seen my motherland since 1990...
Go work now! laugh.gif

In the daily report from the Col.Gheorghiu, head of the A.A.Zone Ialomita, there whre tree attacks on Cernavoda bridge on August 10 1941,in which in was damaged, the pipeline across the bridge set on fire, and in the last attack, the ship "Stefan cel Mare" damaged.
Somewhere in the zone was found an airplane crashed, sed to be an "Maxim Gorki" with tre good engine.I will provide the location soon.
May be the mothership for the bombers? It was not specified the date of crash.
The bridge was bombed also on August 8 1941.one pilar being damaged.

No pilar was not ever damaged, not even when a monitor hit it by mistake. See the magazine I told you about.

The railway bridge "Regele Carol I" from Cernavoda was first attacked on August 9 1941 by a single bomber at 04.45 in the morning, the pipe line set on fire witch was put out after 2 hours. One pilar was slightly damaged.
It is also from the daily raport of the Reg.A.A. Ialomita and Regiunea 3-a Aeriana.

Do you mean that all attackers were shot after mission? :?: I heard that soviet attackers had no losses.

No, he meant that after this mission the pilots were used in convetional (non-Zveno) missions and eventually were lost during the war.
