War episode:

On 25 August 1941, lt. av. Florin Alexiu led a patrula of the 60th Fighter Squadron which attacked the Soviet Fomina-Balka seaplane base, in the vicinity of Odessa. On the lake they found two seaplanes anchored near the shore and another one sunk close to it. Lt. av. Alexiu opened the fire, followed by his wingmen. The Soviet flying boats took many direct hits and he was eventually credited with their destruction.

Died: 17 September 1942, Oblinskaya (killed during a VVS bombing raid)
