Dear forum members!

Please help to identify rank of the man in this photo. Is this fruntas?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Alex

Yes it could be a ”fruntaș” or a ”sergent” (if I'm not mistaking the difference is made by the colour and embroidery on the stripe), he probably wears the M1941 troop field uniform, his beret suggests he is serving with the elite mountain troops. What is he inspecting, a plane?

The planea ppears to be an Il-2

@photo-war: can we see the full photo?, anything on the back? Thanks!

Trust me, you do not want to see the full foto. Kinda gory.

Posted by: ionionescu March 08, 2013 12:49 pm
I want to see any photo, don't care if is gory of not (this „secrecy” among Romanian photo collectors is kinda strange, I encourage everybody to put a solid watermark on their photos and publish them on-line, this way everybody can learn something). Here is a interesting photo, maybe related, I guess the guy is a Russian pilot (or Romanian, German etc.), probably the Romanian mountain hunters were assigned to clear the battlefield of the dead when they were surprised by the photo camera of Alexandru Galaftion, the author of the photo, here something about his life and the source of the photo: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Viata-unui-erou-Alexandru-Galaftion/126896260798213

Maybe it is something to do with respect for the dignity of the dead?

The foto that is the subject here depicts the same scene. Courtesy for the dead required.

war means death and destruction!.......

isn't the plane a YAK1 or 3?

Posted by: Victor March 09, 2013 07:00 am
The way to post such an image is to put the link to it and to issue a warning about its graphic content. This way who wants to see it will follow the link and see it and the rest of the people wjo don't want to see it will not be forced to do it.

"Peacetime" has its share of brutal disasters and accidents too. wink.gif

The tailplanes look like Il-2. The Yak tailplanes were quite different. There is very little to go by anyway.

They saw these situations on a daily basis.
My grandfather was entertaining an idle chatter with unit's cook, while the latter was stirring the soup in a huge cooking vessel. Out of nowhere, a shrapnel severed a half of cook's head, and that half dropped into the soup.
As the soup was ready and expected by all guys around, they picked up the half head out from soup, then they served it.
But the few that saw it did not tell to those who didn't.

Florin, if true, something like this couldn't happen on a daily basis. Weren't they making the soup far behind the front lines?

My grandfather did not claim this kind of thing happened on a daily basis.
He just told me the story.
For the "daily" statement, blame me !
P.S: That is why the event was shocking - they did not prepare the food near the most advanced line.

I could never see a photo of a crashed IAR-80, even considering that once I had searched specially for it.
Is there anything available ? sad.gif

No, romanian mountains troops were not at Odessa. Should be Sevastopol, Crimea or Caucasus.

As I said, post a decent size photo, clear, preferably a scan at minimal 300 dpi, and you'll get your answers. What is the name of the man in the photo?, from what village is he from?, what year was he born? Ask your „friend” this questions and get back to us!
