What was the colour scheme of the Romanian PzIV G (it was the panzer grey color as we can see on the PzIvG from the Romanian National Museum)?

Could someone provide details about colour and camo schemes of the Romanian PzIv (F2, G, H, J) ?

If I remember well, wasn't the PZ. IV at the Romanian Military Museum black, but not grey?

You are right it is actually a dark grey.. almost black... or maybe a kind of dark blue (dark navy), anyway, strange color...

Last time when I saw the exhibit in bright sunshine, it appeared to me that it's painted in dark grey, not black. I have to check my photos, though...

Yes, it looks definitely dark grey on colour photos taken in 1994.

I have a Top Gun magazine in which they present a Pz IV G model. I do not remember the exact color. I lent it to prejo some while ago, because he wanted to build a PZ IV model. PM him and ask.

Unfotunatelly no reply from Prejo... sad.gif

I found a picture in the worlwar2.ro photo gallery, a photo with a PzIV G... Unfortunatelly I can not read the number in the front of the tank. Does somebody have a better photo in order to distinguish the number in the front of the tank?

Any other observations about the markings of this tank?

The same tank is in this photo, registration number U.039253. My presumption is that the photo was taken in spring 1943, after the retreat from Don's bend. In this series of photos, behind the T-4 is the T-3 U.039252, followed by the R-2 U.039223.

I can confirm the number on the white 'army licence plate' is U 039253 (seen in 1943).

Other numbers seen on Rumanian Pz.IVs were U-069015 (1946) and U-017238 (post-1947, RPR era).

TACAM T-60 number U.039723

Thanks Denes for confirmation.
Dragos, do you have a registration number for a TACAM R2?

U-039247

Is there amy meaning to these numbers seen on Rumanian AFVs?

Generally speaking, I think it's unfortunate that there is/are no researcher(s) seriously focusing on Rumanian armour in W.W. 2 - similar to the several persons who already research Rumanian aviation with success, with the fruit of their respective research having been published.

"U" comes from Uscat (Land) and was applied to all the vehicles of the land army. I have noticed that all numbers of AFVs of the 1st Romanian Division during 41-44 start with 039. This does not apply to R-1 tanks (011527, 011502 etc)

What about the markings of that Pz IVG??? Do you have any information about it?

Posted by: dragos April 29, 2004 05:44 pm
As you can see in the photo I posted before, there are no visible markings on the front hull or on the sides of the turret. The base colour may be the olive green, the same used for R-2.

In the photo below (from summer 1944), on the turret side it is painted the tank number (411) and the "Mihai cross", both in white paint.

About the panzer gray colour of the T-4 at the museum, it is dubious. Even if some T-4s would have retained the original German paint, it would most likely be sand yellow, not panzer gray.

A scale model of T-4 in Romanian painting scheme:
