WorldWar2.ro Forum > The post-WW2 and recent military > What anti-tank system should Romania buy?

Posted by: Imperialist March 19, 2009 10:34 pm
I noticed we talked about what helicopters, tanks and fighters Romania should buy.
What about anti-tank weapons systems?

How about the Serbian Bumbar anti-tank guided missile?

To make a really bad joke, the best anti-tank defense system would be to deepen the holes in our road system until they become anti-tank trenches...
On a more serious note, I'm not sure what system do we have in use right now.

MMM, I've seen we're still using RPG-7s which probably make the bulk of our man-portable AT weapons.

In my opinion this would be an interesting acquisition that would enhance the possibilities of use in urban settings:

MBT LAW has a soft launch and can be fired from confined spaces such as inside buildings and vehicle hatches.

Right, but except portable weapons? Do we have anything or just old ATG's?

MMM, read tomcat's post.

In the future, pleasetry to leave out the jokes in serious topics. Thank you.

For the moment beeing, Ithink an upgrade of existing missiles would be sufficient.

Eventually supplemented by a small number of Spikes, in the units that already use it on MLI-84.

According to some sources, a penetration capability of 850 mm RHA seems rather low:

The effective engagement of current and future tanks provided with explosive reactive armor is attained by a direct frontal impact of powerful tandem hollow-charge warheads with an armor penetration of 1,000 to 1,200 mm.

As for the RPG-7s, shouldn't/couldn't we build RPGs of types higher than 7?

The M2T has the warhead of the Milan 2T, which appeared in 1993, and has anti-ERA capabilities. It will punch a hole trough a T-72. Well, an Abbrams could be a different thing.
Of course another stronger warhead could/should be fitted, like Milan 3 or a newer one.

For the RPG-7, why not adapt more poweful rockets based on RPG-29 technology? The launcher is just a tube, it will fire whatever you put in it. In Romania were already made thermobaric rockets, for example.

This would be of coure an interim solution, destined to postpone major acquisition programs until funds are available. At the time we are in delay with the ongoing ones (multirole fighter, APC). Both upgrades could be selled also, for use on numerous existing russian platforms.

Of course the best antitank weapons would be 48 multirole fighters armed with Brimstones, for example, and 24 attack helicopters (Tiger, Mangusta, SuperCobra?) to supplement the SOCAT (which is also an interim solution), armed with Spikes.

How about ERYX?http://www.army-technology.com/projects/eryx/

I think Javelin missile is an option.

What tank battle/tank invasion are we expecting?
What a/t sistem will rom. buy will have nothing to do with the real needs.
Better spend the money on health.

Adding ERYX to our troops in Afghanistan will be very good. One of this rocket against a sniper, machine gun position, house, will be scary for enemy. Mounting ERYX on the roof of a HUMVEE, Duro, or a new turret for Piranha with ERYX and a HMG will increase fire power in patrols.

I don't know if that will increase the capacity of our forces to fight Talibans. Most part of our victims in Afghamistan were made by IED, and few were in firefights. In firefights our forces have overhelming firepower, those casualities were in ambushes or in firefights were the enemy has many more victims.
In Afghanistan we need suplimentary protection against IED, or something that can detect IED, when it will be ready.
