Until 1940-1941, the standard Romanian fighter was the PZL 11 f. During the same period, an overwhelming majority of the Soviet fighters were either I-15 versions or newer I-16s. In the case of an open conflict, the PZL and the Polikarpov would have clashed one against the other. Which was the likely result of such a fight, considering all the factors involved?

Rumanian P.Z.L. P.11s & P.24s did clash with Soviet I-153s and I-16s during the first campaign of ARR (June-October 1941). The result was about even.

What about the clash in 1940 related by Lt Eugen Marinescu 'Matra' between I 15 and PZL 11 at the Romanian-USSR border? It seems that one PZL was shot down, and that some days before an IAR 39(or 37) had the same fate. True or wrong?

Thanks Denes,

By the way, Dan Stoian found that the IAR 37 was brought down on 26th of august 1940 and that next day, 27, one PZL was distroyed.

Actually, the events happened a day earlier than you mentioned. For details, see the same thread.

You can also read about the same incidents (and more) in my recently published book, 'From Barbarossa to Odessa', vol. 1. wink.gif

Off topic. You can see details of my latest book(s) in this thread:

If you want to buy it, you can either find it in the major internet based bookstores, or, if you want a signed copy, I still have a couple of copies left, which I can offer at the publisher's price. If interested, contact me off board for details.
