I have adj. av. Mihai Antonescu of Gr. 2 van., Esc. 65 van., pilot flying an IAR-81, as MIA in Hungary on 45. Jan. 06. Another source gives him as shot down in air combat near Kecskemét on 7 Dec. 44.

What do you know about his fate?

Gen. Dénes

Does anyone know anything about an ARR WWII pilot named Bastan? In 1980, he was an Air Force General in his late 60's, which means he would have been about the right age to serve in the war.
I am just trying to confirm whether he actually fought as a pilot during the WWII or not. If you have heard of him or have his name on one of your ARR pilot list, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

P.S. Denes and Claudiu, you are two of the resident aviation experts on this forum. Maybe you (or anyone else) can check their lists. Thanks again.

I checked my ARR accidents database and could not find any airman called Bastan.

Thanks Petre and Denes for your replies.
From Petre's link I see that during the war he was an NCO in a parachute battalion. It was after the war, in 1948, that he became an aviator - slt. av. - although he subsequently continued to focus his entire military career in the paratrooper branch.

Thanks again to both of you for replying.

Are you talking about general Grigore Bastan, the famous paratrooper and parachute inventor etc etc .?

Found this on net, don't know if it's the Bastan you're looking for or not , but this person doesn't appear to have served as a pilot , maybe he was in the paratrooper regiment in 1944?

Btw , he's from my home town. biggrin.gif (or i'm from his home town- or at least his most famous deeds were while leading the paratrooper batalion there)
