WorldWar2.ro Forum > Awards & Badges > Michael the Brave 1st Class

Posted by: CCJ May 29, 2004 05:07 pm
Hello all,

I am new to the forum. I collect orders and decorations and several years ago acquired a 1st type Michael the brave 1st class numbered 17.

I have not been able to research who the awardee was. I see that 16 were awarded during WW1 so this would have been an early WW2 award.

I will take pictures of this order if anynone would like to see it.

My question is; can anyone tell me who this 1st class Michael the brave belonged to?

Can you be sure it's original?

Well,

I have checked around and everyone who has examined it thus far likes it.

I have images for anyone who wants to look. ' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

Well, it is a little bit difficult to say who was the 17th.
According to records it was marshal Antonescu who received the 17th (and the last) model 1916 1st class of the Mihai Viteazul Order.
However, as head of the Order, King Carol II before him must have been decorated with it. But I do not know if a new 1st class was given to him or the 1st class of King Ferdinand I was passed on to him along with the crown.
So, take your pick Carol II or Antonescu.

I wouldn't think it would be either of the two.

I read on the forum that 16 were awarded in WW1. Does this included all of the foreign awardees as well?

Posted by: Victor May 30, 2004 07:29 pm
During WW1, only two Romanians received the award: Prezan and Averescu. King Ferdinand I also had one, as founder and master of the Order. The rest were foreigners. There is also the list here:

I will take a better obverse image. For some reason the high resolution image I have will not upload. Maybe too large in size!

The maximum size is 750Kb.

Mihai, who were these awarded to?

2nd class was only awarded to a handful of people, so it's not hard to find out who the recipients were.

CCJ, if you really want to complete the set, you'll also need a 3rd class with swords. I think they were issued only after August 23, 1944.

Hi mabadesc,

Eventually I hope to have all three classes of all the types.

Did a communist order replace the Michael the Brave after the war?

Posted by: Carol I June 06, 2004 09:46 am
As far as I know, in the communist period there was no order which resembled the Order of Michael the Brave in award criteria or requirements.

The highest purely military award of the time was the 1949 Defence of the Fatherland Order which was also awarded in three classes for the "organisation and carrying out of war operations which brought an important contribution to the fight for the defence of the fatherland".

Mihai,

I tried to send you a Private Message but it appears I am unable to send anything.

Please contact me by either PM or e-mail if you will. I am interested in discussing your 2nd class Orders of Michael the Brave.

There is some indication that Carol II may have received the first class of the Order of Michael the Brave much earlier than 1930 when he became the head of the order as King of Romania. According to http://www.punctecardinale.ro/mar_2004/mar_2004_3.html in Puncte cardinale, Prince Nicolae, the brother of Carol II, wrote: "I could not have understood and I think I will never understand the reasons for which [Carol] was decorated by King Ferdinand with the Order of Michael the Brave first class". Unfortunately the note is not dated, but the reference to King Ferdinand indicates an earlier award than Carol's last renunciation to the throne (of 1925). I would guess it had been a WWI award Carol received as next in line to the throne, sometime after the order was founded in 1916.

I will now cast a shadow of doubt on Carol II's 1st class of the Order of Michael the Brave. Is there any photo showing him wearing the first class of the order? In all the photos I saw he was wearing only the third class of the order. Is it possible that there is an error in Prince Nicolae's note (either his or that of the author quoting him)?

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember seeing the 1st class among Carol II's decorations in the National Military Museum.

I think it would be nice if someone could give it a check during a visit to the museum, as I remember seeing Carol II's uniform only with the insignia of the third class of the order.

Through High Decree no. 1148 of 6 October 1917, the future king Carol II was awarded the third class of the Order of Michael the Brave.

Posted by: boonicootza December 22, 2005 06:00 pm
It's only the third class.

Victor, if I'm not allowed to post pictures from the museum please delete the image.
