This topic is dedicated to books containing the memoirs of Romanian WWII veterans.

I would like to start with my most recent purchase:

Petre Vasilescu. Arme fara vina, Paideia, 2005
Price: 18 RON

Petre Vasilescu was a lawyer and a reservist cavalry lieutenant. He served in the 9th Rosiori Regiment as mortar platoon commander in 1941 and commander of the Heavy Weapons Squadron and then of the 3rd Squadron in 1943. He fought in Bessarabia and then advanced with his unit to the shores of the Azov Sea, at Berdiansk. In 1943 he fought in the Taman Peninsula, on Myshako Mountain, and then in the Crimea at Eltigen and Kerch. The memoirs are written in a pleasant style and make for an enjoyable and interesting read. The book also contains a part about the seven years he spent in Communist prisons.

Even that it is not a book, i watched a TV documentry about Tudor Greceanu's escape from Aiud communist prison in the early 50'. It is part of the MEMORIALUL DURERII TV series. At the time when the document was made, Tudor Greceanu was alive, but already lost his legs. I was very surprised to see a man, who lost quite everything, but still had some dignity in his eyes. We never knew what happened after WWII with plenty military officers. Gen Jienescu spent years in prison... but i do not know if he died there.

Well, the episode name is: Evadarile din Gulag -- Tudor Greceanu. You can find the complete Memorialul Durerii (10 dvd - 25 hours) at Humanitas. Last summer (2007) it was about 160 Ron (1.600.000 old lei)

Yours,
BM

Great find Bogdan! He was the commander of the regiment's traffic police platoon.
