Hello and welcome to the forum.

Constanta is not in Moldova, here is a thread about airfield near Costanta (at Mamaia): http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=2290

Otopeni, Pipera, Popesti Leordeni are all airfields around Bucharest.

Here is a quick map with a few locations:
Ploiesti, Mizil, Bucuresti (Otopeni, Baneasa, Clinceni, Popesti-Leordeni)

Hi!

you will find below a low res scan of the moldavian region map with main cities/towns.
for the full scan, check this link (2.5M image size) http://www.d13-th.com/user/electric/basarabia-1935.jpg

IMAGES are scanned from a romanian geographical/historical/economical "Atlas" from 1938

Note:

Akerman is Cetatea Alba, not Odessa.
Leipzig is near Romanesti and is in Bassarabia as well
WILKOW is Valcov
Manzar is in Bassarabia

First, a small correction for the first list.
Akkerman is the Turkish name of Cetatea Alba/Belgorod. The port is situated in Southeastern Bessarabia and presently belongs to the Ukraine. It is West of the Dnister River, not East of it (where Odessa is). The city has a very old history going back to the Middle Ages, when it was a very important port for the commercial route coming from the Baltic. It used to be a Genoese city, then Tatar, then Moldavian, then Turkish, then Russian, then Romanian, then Soviet and then Ukrainian.

Now, for the second list.

Beltsi=Balti, in the northern part of present day Republic of Moldavia.
See here: http://www.hartionline.ro/tari/html/moldova1.html

Boteni it's south of Campulung, in Wallachia (Southern Romania), some 150 km north-west pf Bucharest. See here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/g6.html

Calimanesti is a spa resort north of Rm. Valcea, on the Olt Valley, where teh river cuts through the Carpathians, between Transylvania and Wallachia. I never heard of an airfield there and I don't think it was possible to buil one in such a narrow place. See here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/f6.html

Ciocarlia is north of Urziceni, in southern Romania, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/j7.html

Culm - never heard of it.

Focsani is a relatively large city in southern Moldavia, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/j5.html

Ivesti is Southeast of Tecuci, on the road to Galati, also in Southern Moldavia, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/k5.html

Ianca is West of Braila, in Walachia, but realitevly close to the frontline, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/k6.html

I don't know where Kolosvka is.

Kirovograd and Krivoy Rog are in the Ukraine, beyond the Dnister.

Leipzig was a German colony in Bessarabia, situated not much West of Komrat. I don't know if today is the Republic of Moldova or in the Ukraine. It is located in the area where there is a frontier between the two today.

I don't know where Manzar is.

Matca is North of Ivesti (East of Tecuci that is), see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/k5.html

Mizil is located between Ploiesti and Buzau, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/i6.html

Otopeni is the "home" of the biggest Romanian present-day airport and is located several km North of Bucharest. Pipera is also very close to Bucharest (practically soon will be "swallowed" by it) and is located also in the northern part. See here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/i7.html. Pipera isn't mentioned on the map. I have drawn this second one:
user posted image

Rosiorii de Vede is situated in Southern Romania, too far for operations against the Red Army, but it was used for operations against the 15th US Air Force. See here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/g8.html

Tandarei is situated in Southeastern Romania, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/k7.html

Tragusorul Vechi is located West of Ploiesti, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/h6.html

Tepes Voda is just East of Ianca, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/k6.html

Targu Trotus is located between Onesti and Targu Ocna, in Moldavia, close to the Eastern Carpathians, see here: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/i4.html. It used to be a town during Medieval times, but presently it is just a village.

Zilistea is located between Buzau and Rm. Sarat. It doesn't show on this map: http://www.hartionline.ro/ro/harta/j6.html

Hope this helps.

Here is the map that illustrates my first book on ARR, published by Squadron/Signal. You can find in it most of the airfields you're looking for.

Hey, Denes, thanks a lot! That clarifiies a lot!

There are even some places I have been in 1997... Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Tirgo-Mures with the clolour-film-factory, and Sibiu... Bessarabia we didn't visit, too far from Germany...

Do you know which AF's were used by the VVS in 1944 for the "romanian" operations Targos Frumol & Yassy-Kishinev? Are the ones on your map above "all"?

Posted by: Dénes September 03, 2005 07:22 pm
I am glad I could help.

BTW, the Azomures film factory from Tg-Mures is gone since. Incidentally, I was born in that town.

Hi & thanks all,

I found all AF's mentioned in my list, mainly with the help of Dénés' map and the site http://www.fallingrain.com/world/index.html .

But still, I need to find
- Toryshino. 146IAP was based there in 1941 before Barbarossa
- Kirovograd. 132BAP, 232BAP, 60RAP " in 1941 " "

and

- Culm. II/SG10 was based there in 1944. Other sources say "Okecie" and "Bacan". There is a place called "Bacanu" not far from Roman...

Who can help?

Kirovograd/Kirovohrad (48:30:30N 32:15:53E) is situated in Ukraine, NW of Krivoy Rog. I found its location by using http://www.multimap.com/.

I have found a reference stating that Culm or Kulm is the German name for Chełmno (Chełmno nad Wisłą) in Poland.

Thank you Carol! That Multimap is a good hint!

Now I only need to find this "Toryshino"...

There are ca. 10 AF's named after villages very near to each other in the area of Tandarei... Do you guys think this is true or are these just different names for one/some AF's?

Does anyone have aerial pics of airfields located on Dénes' map or similar from the 30ies/40ies?

If you want them to be kept secret, you can send me a mail to pirx AT 88-iap.de I'll keep them for myself. Thanks...

As you probably know there are some countries where the Nazi-related symbols are forbidden and therefore images containing them have to be altered for public displays.

Soem more places:
This are villages:
- Soroki
- Kodyma, Moldavia
- Ungeny
- Rybnitsa, Moldavia
- Kotovsk
This were airfields used by the VVS:
- Todoreny,
- Stefanesty,
- Chizovo,
- Zatishje,
- Semjonovka

Who can locate these?

Posted by: D13-th_Mytzu March 16, 2006 08:16 pm
Ungheni we already have (it is east of Iasi on the other side of Prut river). I think I also located Rabnita but for some reason I cannot see it in my list. As for the otehrs, if they are in Basarabia, do you have their original name (the romanian one) instead of the russified one ?

Todoreny - Todoreni/Tudoreni ? - Take a look at http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/a/T/o/ or http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/a/T/u/.
Stefanesty - Ştefăneşti - There are three such places in Bessarabia (http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/a/350/).
Chizovo - ?

Ungeny must be a different Ungeny, I believe. Because in Ungeny, this happened:
Ml.Leit. Atrashkevitch Fiodor *1916 Shot down by AAA near Ungeny on 26.06.41.

Was definitely not near TirguMures, I think it is this places:
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/56/Ungheni.html near Pruth river...

Todoreny, Romania was a VVS-AF in June 1944

Semjonovka, Odessa region was a VVS-AF also in 24.06.41. Mabe this:
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/0/Semionovca.html
if it is on the east side of Pruth

Chizovo, Odessa region was a VVS-AF also in 1941, maybe this place:
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/UP/0/Chizhevka.html

I think we can get it together all rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif .

http://www.fallingrain.com/world/MD/56/Ungheni.html near Pruth river...

It is the Ungheni at 47:14:25N 27:50:52E, on the left bank of the Pruth. Try select "Ungheni, Moldova" at the link provided by Mytzu. As mentioned before, the address link does not change when you choose to view the map of another location with the same name.

We must still find Chizovo and Semjonovka in Odessa region.
Also I need to find where Gorlovka is (reference in IAR-80 book at page 114), it might be in Odessa region but not 100% sure (it is for sure on the route Odessa - Tuzov).

At page 141 in IAR80 book it says:

"Esc.59Vt cu 10 avioane IAR-80 cu aerodromul de baza Galati, aerodromuri de lucru Ciocarlia si Cetatea Alba" , any ideea where Ciocarlia airfield was ? I found 2 such villages: one in Constanta county the other in Ialomita county, by the look of it the one in Ialomita is out of question and I am not very convinced the one in Cta is the one (me zinks it is E of Galati somwehere).

At page 172 in IAR-80 book it mentions Gheraesti airfield at Bacau - could this be a mistake and actually means Gheraesti airfield at Roman ?

Edited: hmm, at page 195 it says "Ordin Nr.263/26.05.1944. Gr.2 cu Esc. 65 si 66Vt se deplaseaza pe aerodromul Gheraesti, Jud. Bacau in ziua de 27 mai 1944." Does anyone know where Gheraesti/Bacau is ?
