Detail of a W.W. 2-era helmet with the painted-on emblem of King Michael Ist, I have never seen before, currently sold on eBay.

During the parade of 23rd of August 1945, soldiers of the Guard Divison (6th Dorobanti Regiment “Mihai Viteazul” ? ), carried M.1939 helmets decorated with M.1927 King Michael’s cipher on the front side. I’ve never seen a real helmet bearing this cipher. In my opinion it was only a temporary decision, for that particularly event. The paint could be easily erased and since January 1948 all royal symbols (ciphers, crowns, coat-of-arms) have been immediately removed from all uniforms and items of equipment. I would be surprised to learn that a “MI” painted badge survived on a helmet. The helmet paint is very damaged so it was carried long time after the 23rd August 1945 event. I don’t think the badge would survive such a long time. E-bay reveals many surprises and stimulates people's creativity |

It looks genuine. However, the green paint looks freshly repainted. Note also, collectors in eastern europe are using a clear lacquer spray can paint to enhance the original green color but this gives the appearence of the helmet being freshly painted. I think it looks bad and makes the helmet questionable as being a repaint. The helmets should be left in their original condition. If you want to enhance the paint finish, use car wax. It would not damage the helmet and is not there permently and can be removed.
I have seen this helmet with 3 different finish Carol II front plates. First one is left in the bright metal finish of brass/copper. 2nd one is painted in a very dark Olive drab color darker then the medium green olive drab that is on the helmet. The 3rd type, the emblem is painted in a black finish. Can any shed any light as to why ? |

The badge on this helmet is very strange, look at the darker paint on the edge, I think it was repainted or something. Also the story of this helmet is a strange, helmet with Carol the II badge found in Hungary… . You get the idea. @ REGAL UNIFORMA COLECTOR: You can find some Romanian helmets for sale with and without the Carol II badge at the MMN shop (the objects for sale are from private collections) and at resemble prices. That’s if you are from Bucharest. |
