QUOTE (Carol I @ Nov 12 2005, 10:22 AM)
There has recently been one on eBay and it went to 160 USD. But I cannot tell whether it was genuine or not.

The helmet looks very strange. The shell was rough painted, over rusty damaged surface. The badge is also very unusual and it seems to be made of resin (?). Helmets bearing Carol II badge are not so frequent and selling expensive “replicas” might be interesting for clever enterprisers.
As one of the Forum’s members use to say,
Take care!

Yeap, apart from the awefull green paint it looks to me that the badge is also repainted (unless is a resin replica, as Kepi said). This is not the color of the cleaned brass.

Actually, this helmet plate looks good to me. I have seen this plate made from stamped brass as well as stamped copper. They take a sheet of brass or copper and run it through a stamping press. I have examples of both types of helmet plates and they are identical. No wax copies. You frequently see helmets on the market in which the copper plate (Not the brass more common version) is in a raw finish. I have yet to determine if this was done delibertly and actually worn like this or if for some reason 60 years later, paint does not adhear well to copper. I conlude that the paint over copper plates fall off over time due to metal electrolises. All the brass plates found, the paint is always in tack. I asume that paint on brass does not have an adhesion problem.

Hello I heve seen this site. What do you think about the romanian tank helmet. The M 73 helmet with emblem was worn by superior officers?

The Romanian tank helmet is extremely rare.
The M.73 helmet with the Socialist Republic of Romania coat of arms was carried only by the officers and men of the 30th Guard Regiment, somehow to embellish this ugly head gear. All other units carried plain M.73 helmets.

In 1942 a new version of the M-38 was produced as the M-38/42, which was fitted with German M-31 style liners.

Romania used a variety of Dutch-produced steel helmets during World War II including the Dutch M-28 helmet with a distinctive King Carol badge, called the Romanian M-38. After King Carol II went into exile the use of this emblem was discontinued.
