To all those seeing the the JAS39 as the next generation fighter of Rumania...I wana let you know that the last marketing chances of SAAB in W.Europe have fadded away as Austria has selected the EFA instead JAS 39 . As I have mentioned previously, the deal with Hungaria was based on Government to Government basis which has nothing to do with the preformance of the aircraft nor the operational costs and assets of the Grippen......I strongly doubt that Rumania will ever go for this deal, if at all the Grippen will still be manufactured by than .

And you think (Al.) F-16 will ever win a contest from a new fighter, for Romania?
And you don't think this trade will be a Government to Government thing... between RO gov. and US gov. ?

Hungarian Pilot Flies Gripen

"" The first solo flight by a Hungarian Air Force pilot took place at the Swedish Air Force base F 7 at Såtenäs today 23 March 2005.

“It was a fantastic first flight. Gripen was an exceptionally powerful and agile aircraft to fly and with the good weather and perfect preparations, it was an extraordinary combination for my first solo flight" - said Major Fekete Tamás, in a comment after his flight.

Major Fekete Tamás has been in Sweden since January 2005 and has undergone simulator training and flying training with Swedish Air Force flight instructors in the, SK 60 trainer and the dual seat version of the Gripen aircraft.

Another four (4) pilots from the Hungarian Air Force, who also arrived in Sweden in January, have undergone the same conversion training on the Gripen aircraft. This first group of Hungarian pilots will be trained to an Instructor Pilots (IP) level on Gripe and their training of the will be completed by March 2006 in time for the arrival of the first aircraft to the Kecskémet airbase.

Production of the Hungarian Gripen aircraft is well underway at Saab´s facility in Linköping and the first aircraft made its maiden flight on 16th February 2005. The first Gripen fighter aircraft will be delivered in March 2006 and deliveries will be completed in December 2007. In total, Hungary will lease fourteen (14) Gripen fighter aircraft twelve (12) single seat and two (2) dual seats for a period of ten (10) years, between 2006 and 2016. After that Hungary will take ownership of the 14 aircraft and associated equipment.

Hungary was the first NATO country to choose to operate the Gripen, and will be taking delivery of the C and D versions of the aircraft. These aircraft are the latest standard of the Gripen, equipped with full color cockpit displays, a retractable Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR) probe and are fully NATO-interoperable. ""

Well, Austria is not the best example, for a country who aquire fighter planes. Maybe, after we see how the fighter works in other country service, we can take good conclusions. In this time, Grippen is on his way..


South African Air Force 707 Re-fuelling Tanker Arrives in Sweden for Gripen Trials

" Saturday 19 March saw the arrival of a South African Air Force (SAAF) Boeing 707 re-fuelling tanker aircraft, at Saab's facility in Linköping, Sweden.

After a 15 hour flight from South Africa, the tanker and its team of 20 SAAF aircrew and ground crew landed at 13.00 where they were welcomed by Ola Rignell, Mikael Seidl and Mats Lundberg from Saab’s Flight Test organization. The team were also greeted by Chris Skinner, Charl Coetzee and Mike Edwards from the SAAF/Armscor Gripen Joint Project Team based in Linköping.

The SAAF tanker will be based in Linköping for the next few weeks, where it will be taking part in a series of ground and air-to-air (AAR) re-fuelling trials with the Gripen new generation fighter. "

Yesterday, the first 5 Gripen (versions C and D ), out of the 14 ordered, have landed on Kecskemét AFB.

I would hate to see Romania stuck with the obslolete 3rd generation F-16 especially second hand ones for the next 30 years! while others countryes equip their air forces with 4th and 5th gen fighters.EF/Rafale and JAS-39 offer the same level of superiority over F-15/F-16 as those in turn offerd to Fishbeds and Floggers.Like general Gheorghe Catrina said the F-16 is an obsolete plane and he knows better what he's talking about.

Denes I am glad that Hun AF was smarter than Czech airforce. You've got RWR 's on them , air refueling and Precision attack capabilities. CZAF will be subjected to upgrades.

Alex, you should check better what you are saying about IDF F-16's. Those are 4th generation planes. Hightly upgraded and superbly mantained. IDF F-16 are considered the best mantained F-16 in the world.

Well Tomcat if the Romanian Airforce Chief of Staff said they are obsolete, I believe the man.You are right though that the F-16 is a 4th generation aircraft, I stand corrected ant that would make the F-18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, Saab Gripen Dassault Rafale, Su-XX 4.5 generation.

And if we really have to buy F-16s then it should be the block 60 that are far more capable than any Israeli upgraded F-16A with the highly capable APG-80 AESA radar but on the other hand those are very expensive.
