Denes thanks great info, I would appreciate more details on this Luftwaffe pilot .....I have been looking foir it quite long, and I wasnt aware he was....do you have other photos of him ?

Alex

H. W. Lerche wrote his autobiography, which was translated also in English.
A very interesting read, which I can recommend.

Here something about the WONGO WONGO, it took off from the 376 Bmb Grp from Benghazi ...it flew on formation on mediteranian and while climbing to higher altitude the pilots who were lightly dressed due to the heat in Benghazi elected to wear the high altitude heated suits and as is presumed inadvertedly pushed the airplane on a high speed dive beyond recovery ( due to fuel and bombs wheight) and plunged into the sea. It will be excavated sometimes in 2005

Al

I noticed the last line in your statement - does this mean they are looking for the wreckage of Wongo Wongo?

If we are on the subject of wrecks what ever happened to "Hail Columbia" flown by "Killer" Kane? he flew it to Cyprus I believe and pranged it on landing. Was it ever repaired or just scrapped like so many others?

Dan and All ...here's something about PUDGY
==============================

Hello Alex,

I have been busy and wanted to get back to you. Here is the photo of the grave of Robert 'Pudgy' Ward. I didn't know if you were aware that his B-24 was named for him? He was reburied in Omaha in 1949 and rests beside his parents and younger brother. The cemetery is just a short drive from my house. At this time, I do not have any other photos of his crew. I have been corresponding with a guy in Romania who has an interest in Ploesti crash sites, especially this one. His name is Ciprian. Have you been in contact with him?

I have also included a photo of the Storz Family mausoleum as it is in the same cemetery. Robert Storz died in 1992. As you know, Robert Storz was the regular pilot of Palm's Brewery Wagon but flew Per Diem II that day. The Storz family owned a brewery and was one of the richest in Omaha at the time of WWII. His family connections coupled with the fact that Storz was 42 in Aug, 1943 leads me to believe he could have easily avoided combat duty if he chose to.

I have been following your posts on the Romanian website and I must say, this is exciting. I have wanted to have some contacts in Romania for some time now and I am following their progress. Please keep me posted with what's new.

Dan and All

Here's a message I got from a family member of a crew from OLD BALDY which crashed on the Roumanian 7th A/A Regiment 86th Battery defending Ploesti...it looks that we going to get soon some info and photos on the crew of the OLD BALDY

========================

Alex--

Thanks for all the information on the Ploesti sites. I am
researching the fate of Old Baldy and found the amazing photos
connected to it on your site. Of particular interest is the memorial to the
anti-aircraft crew that Old Baldy evidently killed during its crash. I
noticed that there is an inscription at the base of the memorial and
what looks like an emblem on the refinery side (away from the camera).
By chance are there details of this? Also, do you know of any further
accounts of Old Baldy's fate--recollections, photographs, etc.

I believe that I will be able to post crew pictures and other photos of
Old Baldy and others on your site shortly--none have been published
before.

Thanks again.

Another panoramic view of ex. Astra refineries ( today Rompetrol). The picture was taken close to the area were Old Baldy crashed on AA position from 7 Reg.
