The six 88 AA guns of 86 Battery were placed near the road ( Ploesti to Buzau) from Ghighiu village to Berceni village. "Voinicul" was placed at the exit of Corlatesti village.

And Berceni village. In the forest of Berceni was the 7th regiment unit buildings( cazarma). Today it's still there but i don't know if keep the initial purpose.

The gun from the 86th Battery that shot down the Old Baldy was dubbed Voinicul. The battery was commanded by cpt. Cosmin Istrate. The guns were placed between the Berceni village and the Gighiu Monastery. Serving Voinicul were frunt. Ion Garlan (aiming), sold. Gheorghe Bala (loanding), sold. Alexandru Partica, sold. Constantin Disdedea and sold. Tudor Ghiaur. Sold. Paun Otet was holding the fire lever and waiting for the command. After cpt. Istrate lowered his arm, the gun fired and the B-24 received a direct hit in the nose. The shell went through the entire bomber, probably killing everyone instantly. Old Baldy went down on the Voinicul position. All six soldiers and cpt. Istrate were killed. The monks at the Ghighiu Monastery took care of the burial of the 17 bodies. There should be a cross, with the names of the 7 Romanian artillerymen on it, at the spot where it happened.

Victor

And the 2 pages from the book of Ioan Grigorescu depicting "The Mighty" AA and Old Baldy crew fate on 1 august '43.
Fragments were translated by Victor ( thanks ) in preview post.
PS: Maybe some one could translate all, it's interesting story.

As far as I know this bunker was in the south area of Otopeni airfield. Today it's the military aviation unit and military transport airfield area south of Otopeni airfield. When you are in a B-737 landing on the main runway you can see the military base and planes (Antonov An-26, Hercules ) on the right .
It is also posible that bunkers could be also at the entrance in Otopeni village ( right side of the bridge) where today its a military unit too.

PS: Alex i sent you the Otopeni military unit badge in your pack.

Otopeni is a village. And Otopeni airport it's named "Henry Coanda' today and it's in the middle of Otopeni village ( close to the north side).
The german bunkers were probably somewhere from north of Baneasa forest to the south of Otopeni airfield. The other village around Otopeni is Tunari NE of Bucharest , Balotesti NE of Otopeni airfield.

The only way to make pictures ( for your issue) is from the air. ( sorry i don't have pilot licence). huh.gif
Because that bunkers should be now in a military zone!!!

Other opinions ( hey Bucharest guys where are you hiding mad.gif )

Dan.
