At least some of the Yugo hurricanes wore the B type raf camo, as this fabric wing Hurricane shows.
This photo clearly shows the old RAF markings overpainted on the tail, fuselage and wings.
They could i guess be identified among the ARR ones by the shape of the unarmored wind shield.

Hi, 1-0-9.
Thanks for the pictures . They are greats. Also the undersurface of rom. service Hurry pictures could lead us to find ex. Yugo Hurry. But unfortunetly all the pictures with rom.Hurry that i saw were black and white british cammo undersurface wings.

Dan.

The problem is, which of the RAf caom types ARR planes had?
Here is a fragment from the excellent SAM book on hurricane.
Based on the delivery date, there could only be between 2 and 6. None of them feature any sky colour on the undersurface, just black, white and aluminium.
The sky undersides apeared in may 1940, after the batch of 12 Hurries were delivered to Romania.
Frankly, as a modeller I think that these are important issues, far more important than werknummers or other minor details.

Based on this photo from Aripi Romanesti wartime magazine , the undersides could have been the second type of raf camo. Other photos in which the left side is obviously black contradict this though ...I wish someone would be gentleman enough and share with us a clearer picture...any?..no?

I agree with you 1-0-9( from the modeller point of view). But the brit give us (today) so much trouble with all that different types of undersurface cammo in a short perioad for Hurry.

BTW, the document you posted - copied from a book - is not accurate regarding the Hurricanes (I didn't cross check the other airplane types).
The 2 Hurricanes given as "Damaged" were, in fact, written offs. One was shot down in air combat, while the other one, an ex-Yugo Hurricane, was destroyed on ground by strafing Soviet fighters.

If you allready had such usefull information for Aleks why you waiting so long to let him know sad.gif

First, as I mentioned, I am already in touch with Aleks and gave him relevant information and a photo.

Second, his study is about the April 1941 war in Yugoslavia, not about the career of ex-Yugoslav war material in other air forces.

Mayby my posted document was not a perfect one ( indeed is a copy of a document made after the first campain but it's not a fake ).

No-one said it's a fake. All I pointed out is that it's a secondary source, not an original document.

The fact that the figure related to the Hurricane's activity in the ARR's first campaign is not accurate is not your fault at all. I merely corrected it, so it would not be used as source by others.

Ups. I miss this one!

All RYAF Hurries were overpainted in three tone upper camo before the beggining of war. British serials posted by our new colleague are correct.

Cheers,
Aleks

I forgot to menion that photos of RYAF machine on the top of the page are property of Mr. Malcom Passingham. They are made in England during test flights.

I just received a reply from Andrew Thomas, author of several books related to the Hawker Hurricane:
"Well, Denes, it looks like they were fabric covered!
Here is an excerpt from a document I found:

QUOTE
The a/c came from the 1st prod'n batch built by Hawkers (L1547-L2146) that had Merlin II engines and Watts wooden props, but many later rep'd by Merlin Iis and Rotol or DH vp. props.
Fabric covered wings fitted to all a/c but many were later modified with metal stressed wings at Maint. Units.

Based on the info Steve E., Andy T. and Tony H. has provided me, it now appears as certain that the dozen Hurricanes exported to Rumania originally rolled off the production line with fabric covered wings. Somewhere on the route from the Hawker factory to service with Esc. 53 vân. , some, or all, wings have been replaced by metal covered ones.
Some more detective work has to be done, to find out when and how this change has happened.
