What fighter plane do you think Romania should use?

Well I admit I'm a Grippen fan, even if I think the best choice (best as in performant, effective) would be the Eurofighter. But I'd be satisfied with the second best too - meaning the Grippen

As for the Raffale, I think they manufacture about a couple per year...

The Gripens are offered without weapons. So the final costs will be bigger. On the other hand, the payments will be done in 15 years, with the first moneys beeing given only 2 years from now on. And 100 %offset. So from financiar point of view looks better than the american offer, where the money are given at once.

No. They are more than desperate. The Gripen flew for the first time in 1988 (incidentally, that was when the F-16 block 25 became operational). Since then, no one really bought it in any significant numbers and Saab are well-aware of that. Commercially, it is a flop.

Did you read the comments in reply to that article? Man! What an emotive issue! So many personal insults! So much hatred! Enemies? Who needs enemies? Let these guys at each other and the enemy may simply walk in across the borders while Romanians tear each other to bits over personal opinions.

Actually is nothing like that.
We will still need to invest a shitload of money in airbase modernization, in maintenance and in training, not to mention the weapons package, which is a different deal.

F-16 SH might not be the best offer right now, but is the most affordable.
And this was known since 2009 I think when it was that release for Sales authorization to US congress for 24 SH and 24 New F-16 Bl 52, plus engines and weapons.

I am surprised that we did;t get the Euro fighter. There are available SH ones.

And in 15 years when the SH deplete their flight resource , what do we do ?
Buy F-35 at over 100 millions per airframe ?

the austrian airforce received a few EFs which were already operated by the german luftwaffe.

The best fighter for Romania would be the Eurofighter Typhoon.
- it's reliable
- it's fast-
- it's multirole
- it's european
- it's new and not second hand
- it gives the IAR company a chance to chare their aviation expertise and to participate in the eurofighter program wich is good for the Romanian economy and can bring extra jobs to Romania....

If Romania buys F-16 fighters it's possible to face the same problems with the parts like our Royal Dutch Airforce has.... It's an American fighter and with everything you need for it General Dynamics sends first the parts the US airforce needs for their aircraft and than they will look what they can send to other countries...

So go for european for better european/romanian economy and make the romanian part in the eu stronger!

and please don't be so stupid like our govnerment to go for the joint strike fighter...
the us airforce don't want it but because it costed already to much they have to take it...
nobody wants it in europe but ofcourse our govnerment likes everything american...

Since my first vote, long ago, was for an autochtonous fighter, build here, and i randomly find just now this clip about our planes, i will post it now (some models look very interesting)

All that was need back then was a competitive engine, which i think is not such hard now to buy a license. Gripen after all use an american engine. But i know is very hard today, to make your own plane, at least from financial point of view, even if you give work to your own industry, and a cooperation will help you too financialy speaking.

I wonder anyway, if we took the Gripen, and that 100% offset in our aviation industry, why we cant buy after some 20-30 years the F 35. As the things looks now, F35 isnt yet ready, still have a lot of problems, from technical to financial ones, some partners even think to drop some commands, and the price is increasingly bigger, i think US will not say "no" if we'll make an offer some 20 years from now. Anyway, i think this is a political deal, and even if Gripen will give us those planes for free, we'll took the same SH F 16 "oldies".

you're right about that.

More than 900 millions goes into refurbishment of aircraft and the training of aircrew's and maintenance personnel.

The airbase modernization is not such a significant amount .
