He might be Romanian-born or might have Romanian ancestors judging by his name (Bogdan). And on December 6 he will be named head of the F-35 program.

"Bogdan" is a Slavic name and it means "God given" (same meaning as the Greek Theodore/Tudor). It is used by many nations, so this does not mean much. The F-35 is quite pricey. No amount of "name-based corruption" will make it cheaper.

You are NOT serious... First of all, the simple fact that he's named "Bogdan" will not indicate a Romanian origin, but more likely a Slavic one (as Radub pointed out); but most of all, I do not think that in USA things go like that, in what concerns military equipment. As for the F35 programme, I doubt we'll see it in USAF anytime soon, not to mention RoAF...

The story is from 3 years ago. Anyway, the deal is now clear: 12 F-16 A/B from Portugal. That's all we can afford at the moment.

I am affraid that the first F16 arriving in Romania will be assigned to Romanian Aviation Museum

That is pathetic. We would be better zero houring our Migs an fly them another 10 years, until we have the money to buy something decent. And then we need at least two squadrons plus some double seaters, not 12...

More than anything, Romania needs to keep its pilots "operational". Pilots need to fly a set number of hours to maintain their flying status. The Lancers are coming to the end of their operational lives. The Lancers cannot be "patched", "revived", "reshaped", "re-engineered". This is it. They have a set number of allowed flying hours before metal fatigue makes them break apart. That set number of hours is coming to an end. Romania cannot afford expensive planes. It needs planes. Any planes. So it will have to buy cheap planes. This may be the most cost-effective way to keep the pilots "active". It is a crummy deal by any stretch of imagination. But crummy as it is, it may make ends meet for a while in the hope that somehow things will improve eventually and money will become available to purchase some new hardware. The sad truth is that no one can tell when the "better times" will come and what planes Romania may afford then.

No, other than the life experience of somebody living seven years in Romania post-December 1989 and keeping in touch with his native country. At this latter part I could / I should do better, but whatever.

If you think logically, this "bribe" theory just makes no sense. Assuming for just one fraction of a second that a "bribe" is all that was needed, it stands to reason that the "bigger bribe" would win the bid. There are much bigger players in this game who can pay bigger bribes.
Face it, Romania can only afford those planes. Yeah, you can dream of Ferrari but no one can bribe you into buying a Ferrari if all you can afford is a Dacia.
