Interesting! I wonder if the results (quite similar to what happens in my English classes sometimes, with major differences between test papers and oral evaluation) would have been as bad for some of the Romanian clerks...

One has to take into account the fact that, as a rule, evaluation was extremely strict during the interwar era. I remember my grandparents saying that the general mindset of the teachers was : "10 is for God, 9 for the professor and 8 for the student".

Most probably there was no second page, as it was mentioned in the article that everybody was tasked to write a one-page "essay" in Rumanian on a given topic. I also believe the mark (I guess 5 on the scale of 10) is too harsh. Gen. Dénes |
