I am interested in builders , origins and final fates
of the following Romanian screw tugs of 1940.

DECEBAL ex ARHANGELOS
Built 1889 Glasgow
21.48x3.80x1.77m 100ihp

NISTRUL ex FRATII DANIEL
Built 1908 Glasgow
21.90x4.87x2.25m 200ihp

TROTOSUL ex SOLOMON ex MORENO
Built 1911 Cardiff
16.75x3.30x1.98m 120ihp

PHOENIX 1 - 4
Built 1917 Southampton
24.81x5.04x1.32m 250ihp

Answer by David Asprey:

These four were built for the War Office fleet in Mesopotamia -
twin-screw tunnel tugs of 95grt 81.5 x
16.3 x 4.4ft with twin compound engines:

T 20: Rennie Forrestt, Wivenhoe (Yd 1285) 1916
T 22: Rennie Forrestt, Wivenhoe (Yd 1287) 1916
with engines by Plenty & Son
T 75: Day Summers, Southampton (Yd 164) 1917
T 76: Day Summers, Southampton (Yd 165) 1917
with engines by Day Summers

The were shipped out to Basrah for final fitting out and commissioning.
At the end of the war they were
brought back to the UK and sold in 1920 to R McGregor. He resold them
in 1922 to Phoenix Oil & Transport
Co Ltd, London who renamed them PHOENIX 1-4 (though I do not know the
correlation of T numbers with
Phoenix numbers). They were then sailed out to the Danube via the
French canal/river system,
Mediterranean, Bosphorus and Black Sea. At some point, probably in the
1930s they were sold by Phoenix
to local Romania, Dr Ecat Radacovici. In 1940 they were chartered by
the British-owned Goeland Transport
& Trading Co Ltd to keep them from German use, though that was
short-lived. Then what????

Owned by Gheorge & Joan Varnalis, Galatz
Built as screw tug CINA PASSALAQUA
1942 already Romanian flag
Jul 1944 taken by German IMROD(D) as Minesweeper
1 August 1944 still rebuilding at Braila
Fates ?????

About PHOENIX

Beeing by chance friend with Sorin Radacovici I found the drawings of the class. Two were transformed in Danube minelayers carring numbers, I could not identify yet.
Mr. Radacovici lives today as a US citizen.
One of them survived war and was used by Navrom. She was usedfull because had the two propellers in tubes at the keel level and a very low water draught. Scrapped in 1968.

TROTUS survived war and was in Navrom Danube passanger transport in 1968 as a coloured beautifull picture taken by painter Ion Taralunga shows. All technical data are available in Navrom river ships list.
