Is this true? I heard that in late '50 Romania tried to copy an ww2 Maybach engine (most likely coming from a Panther). It did not work, but in the end license for the engine war bought, together with the know-how. What came out was a 1000 HP development of that engine (supercharged this time). Production started in mid '60s. It was used mostly for oil extraction equipment, but it could have been easily converted to military applications if needed. It was produced for 20 years and exported in significant numbers. In late '80s the license for Leo2's MTU (former Maybach) engine was bought and in '89 tooling was being prepared for production.

Anybody knows details about this?
