On August 26, 1944, the first armoured units of the Soviet Army penetrated into Northern Transylvania through the Uz Valley (Valea Uzului), in the Eastern Carpathians. A bitter fight ensued between Soviet tanks and mounted infantry and the local Hungarian/Székely defenders, who were overgunned and outnumbered.
Over 150 Hungarian soldiers and civilians died in the battle. Now, 60 years later, a memorial was erected on the site of the clash (source: DunaTV): http://www.dunatv.hu/hirado/?200408280008 (in Hungarian) Col. Dénes |
