i agree that a volunteer in an army is a job, pretty much like like any other job, comparable to a police officer job without detention power. i agree to pay taxes to uphold this and i don't advocate getting rid of that employment type, at least not as long the human nature is not developed enough to realize that a war solves nothing and does absolutly no good (other than making weapon salesmen rich).

what i don't agree with (it's not your post i'm disagreeing with) is the concept of conscription and further the way it is decided wether to go to war or not. i think any important decision like a military involvment should be the result of a referendum. but it's unlikly to see that since that would mean for a gov. to give up a power they shouldn't have in first place.

if it's my choice not to be a soldier i want to be left alone. i am largly imune to the concept of ordered loyality and patriotism since i firmly belive loyality is earned and cannot be demanded.

I beg to disagree. I can't imagine an issue where a referendum would be less appropriate than the decision to go to war. Example : imagine the US setting up a referendum to decide intervention in Korea. By the time the referendum is over, South Korea is overun and the war is over. When speed, initiative and decision are needed wat you want is an able government. Otherwise you risk dying at the hand of your own nice but cumbersome principles.

you are of course right, it might not make sense allways indeed, especially from military point of view.

yet i don't recognize the authority of any biological entity on the planet to tell me to go kill someone else, whatever the reasons are. as soon this happens that very person is my enemy and not the desinged target.

Exactly. People here I live are so brainwashed they think you are some kind of terrorist or anti-American just because you don't want to grab a gun and join the bandwagon.

I have full respect for that view. Unfortunately we live in an imperfect world. And we have to make do with a "government" ;-)
