No. IAR-93/ORAO was the plane from YUROM joint porject. IAR 93 was an subsonic ground attack, and is out from romanian service (unfortunatelly - my opinion). Ex. yugoslavs use yet this type and used him in theyr conflicts.

IAR 99 SOIM is newer than IAR 93 and was projected with 93 experience in back. I read many times about 99... was developed from 99, but a simple look will reveal a fact: it loocks like majority of modern jet trainers designs.

Some years ago IAR 99 was in Israel interests, and at a momment was a scandal with romanian boss of Avioane Craiova factory and Israel... That manager appears to give the blue prints to israely guys...

It is cheap, up graded, can use both eastern and western weapon systems, etc. Why is not under other countrys flag? Just because is a romanian plane... and because no one at commands want to be exported withoud some moneys for his pockets.

Is hard to see chinese trainer jet to have more succes than IAR 99 SOIM...

Another problem is that it seems to be in a crowded market place where there are existing successful competitors. The British Hawk was sold to the Americans as an advanced trainer - the first foreign aircraft since the Harrier to be be built in bulk for the Americans. It thus has an enormous prestige advantage over its competitors in sales to smaller countries.
