I understand that even though Hungary and Romania were both fighting the Soviet Union in support of the Germans that there were some clashes between their armed forces prior to 1944. I think these incidents weren't just on the Hungarian-Romanian border, but also on the Eeastern Front. Can anyone tell me the extent of fighting. Any details would be appreciated.

I haven't heard of such clashes but would be interested to learn about them.

What I do know is that in the Eastern Front campaigns German units were regularly placed between Hungarian and Romanian units precisely to avoid any clashes between the two.

A certain degree of animosity was certainly present inspite of the fact that Hungary and Romania were fighting on the same side at that time.

I'm reading "Third Axis , Fourth Ally" by Axworthy, Scafes and Craciunoiu, which mentions 254 armed clashes on the border between Sep 1940 and Aug 1944 (p15) and the Romanian 3rd Army nearly coming to blows with the Hungarian Rapid Corps on the River Bug on 10 Aug 1941 (p65). I was interested in the later mostly, but any information would be interesting.

There were a few occasions when Romanian troops fired on Hungarians and vice-versa in 1941, but were small scale engagements, maybe even accidental.

There were also times when the two armies cooperated on the Eastern Front. I know of two such cases. First, in March 1942, when the Romanian Skier Detachment of col. Ioan Rotta had under its command a Hungarian cavalry squadron from the 108th Light Division in the fights on the Bereka Valley, 50 km south of Kharkov. The second one is on 27 August 1941, also in the Ukraine, in the Budy area (between the Bug and Donetsk Rivers), where the 2nd Hungarian Motorized Brigade, that was deployed near the 1st and 2nd Squadrons of the 9th Rosiori Regiment, requested the help of Romanian artillery around 1600 hours, because it was under attack by a Soviet regiment in the Budy area.
