Romanian Troops abroad

I'm interested in the number of romanian troops deployed abroad. I've read something about 8.000 or 20.000 troops but I can't recall the source and/or if it was the TOTAL number of troops ever deployed under UN mandates...

I'm sure this information is public...

Somalia ,a few years ago.

It was the total number in past years, I belive. Today there are some 2,000 deployed abroad:

- Irak: over 800
- Afghanistan: around 450
- Kosovo: ?
- Bosnia: ?

SFOR (Stabilization Force)
The mission began in December 1996. The number of Romanian forces has been reduced in time, as the situation in Bosnia stabilized. Presently there are 149 Romanians in several units deployed in the former Yugoslavian province:
- the Bosnia Detachment: 68 engineers at Butmir
- a detachment of 45 infantrymen subordinated to the Dutch command Banja Luka
- a military police platoon of 25 men in the MSU
- RO-NIC (intelligence cell) 4 men
- 7 officers in different allied command positions

OSCE mission in Georgia
It started on 22 July 1999. There are presently 5 Romanian military observers in the former Soviet republic and the situation seems to worsen.

MONUC (Mission de l'Organisation des Nations Unies au R.P. Congo)
The mission started on 30 November 1999. 27 Romanian military observers are present there to oversee the implementation of the Lusaka Agreement.

KFOR (Kosovo Force)
The mission started in March 2000. The Romanian participation in Kosovo was downsized last year. Presently there is only one infantry company of roughly 100 men, subordinated to the Italian battalion Task Force Aquilla .

UNMEE (United Nation Mission in Ethiopia and Erithreea)
The mission started in December 2000. 8 Romanian officers were sent to act as observers on the border between the two African countries.

ISAF (International Security Assistance Force)
The mission in Kabul started on 30 January 2002. Romania sent a military police platoon of 25 men and put a C-130 (with the 14 men servicing it) at the disposal of the international force.

Enduring Freedom
The mission started in July 2002. The Romania participates with a mechanized infantry battalion (405 men), which is being changed every six months. So far the 26th, 812th and the 151st Mechanized Infantry Battalions had served. Presently the 280th Mechanized Infantry Battalion is deployed at Kandahar, in Afghanistan. Notably it was the experience in the first months in Afghanistan, which eventually led to the new Romanian uniforms (model 2002) being adopted (after the British army uniforms).

Iraqi Freedom
The mission started in July 2003. The Romanian participation is the largest since Angola. It comprises of a mechanized infantry battalion (400 men). The first rotation was covered by the 811th Infantry Battalion and presently the 26th Infantry Battalion is deployed at Nasiriyah in Irak, as part of the Italian Sassari International Brigade. In the same location there is also a company (100 men) of the 265th Military Police Battalion. These units are British command and 12 Romanian officers are part of the multinational division's staff. In total some 520 men.
Under Polish command was deployed and engineering detachment (149 men) from the 96th Engineer Battalion (the same that distinguished itself in Bosnia), based at Al Hillah, and a Special Detachment (56 men), which operates Shadow 600 UAVs. A total of 205 men.
There are also 7 officers in the joint allied command, so that makes roughly 730 men.

Total: 1,463

There is also the UNMIK (United Nations Mission in Kosovo), but which is being carried out by gendarmes (115) and policemen (38 ), but they are all employees of the Interior Ministry and not part of the army.

Victor, which is your source? Ministry of defence? I ask you because I'm also interested in different kind of infos regarding Romanian Army.

(Sorry for not editing my previous post! I noticed too late!)

4 officers of the 151st Infantry Battalion "The Black Wolves" received "Medalia de merit a Forţelor Terestre ale SUA" for special merits during missions as part of Task Force GUN DEVIL in Afghanistan.
Also, the whole battalion received "Certificatul De Apreciere Pentru Merite Deosebite".

p.s. what are the original names of the US distinctions they received?

Who knows more about romanian instructors for iraqi army. For sure this happend in region with italyan troops. I saw photos, but "no comment".
