Today is Independence Day of Romania, celebrating 9th of May 1877. Mihail Kogălniceanu, the Prime Minister of that time, declared: "...în stare de rezbel…, dezlegaţi de legăturile noastre cu Înalta Poartă şi prin urmare ce suntem? Suntem independenţi, suntem naţiune de sine stătătoare".
I don't know what is the traditional wish in this kind of ocasions "Happy Independence Day" or "Long live Romania", so I'll choose the late. |

It was completely drowned out by several other days - Europa League Final Day, Europe Day and Monarchy Day (May 10). Independence Day received no media coverage/mention from what I saw.

Yes, indeed, Imperialist, and this is too bad, as it is an important landmark in romanian history...and more than 10.000 romanian soldiers died in the Independence War in Bulgaria in 1877-1878 many other thousands being crippled by wounds or diseases on the battle fields.
But, anyway, is up to us, romanians, if we leave the significance of this day to die. I decided not to. What you guys will do? A kurdish saying is that "a people (nation) who doesnt know who it is, will became worse than a cattle" (an the poor kurdish people doesnt even have a country of their own...). |

If anybody cares:
My grandfather's grandfather was among the first guys to reach the other shore of the Danube, to protect the building of the bridge used by the rest of the army. A Turkish bullet pierced his boat, and the water that flooded the boat made wet all the guys using it. My grand-grand-grandfather got a bad cold from this, and it is interesting that he never fully recovered for the rest of his life. |

...If Germany would win WWII, we may rather celebrate on May 10 the "Battle of France Start Day". |
