So where are the tanks?

I believe they did not show Heavy Tanks on purpose. People still remebmber the days of the revolution, - especially in Bucharest where tanks rolled in - a tank is a pretty fightening sight - so when tanks roll into a town people don't necessarily rejoyce. You don't want to frighten them-
better not to show tank -
2) or second possibility - they are in such bad shape and so outdated that you are ashamed to show them openly [to the world].
Better keep then in Storage. laugh.gif laugh.gif

What the hell is with those new American (?) helmets, and horrible camo uniforms?!

That is the anti-terrorist brigade of the SRI. You know the former USLA.

They just don't have it. Socialist Romania was way more impressive, when showing off.

Sure there was something thrilling in seeing all those workers march for their beloved leader.

I guess you can be right about the psichological effect related to the Revolution, thaugh for what I know there are many who were upset that the tanks were missing. Tanks are usually very apreciated at parades, probably 'cause they inspire force and people feel safer knowing them on guard in case of conflict.

As for the bad shape, even if many Romanian tanks are operational only on paper and in a really bad shape, I'm sure there can be found a few that are good enough to be presented in a parade.

One guess is that the officials in both Bucharest and Alba-Iulia were frightened that a heavy tank will destroy the poorly constructed city roads. As the asphalt on the roads is too soft (all Romanians know how many holes appear in the road, braking down their cars, because the asphalt is poor quality) I think the tracks of a tank would have created real tranches along the way. In some very hot summer days in Bucharest you can penetrate in the asphalt with your shoes if you stand still a few minutes and you weigh more than 100 pounds. Even in winter times you can make small holes in the road just by dropping something heavy from your hands (a brick for example, I've had such an experience last week).

As this parade was made to impress the public and the foreign officials, they took no risks at all. Frankly I missed the tanks too.

Of course that a leader is more beloved when he begins by doing a minimum for those workers : giving them a job. Today, a great part of those workers are nowhere... Maybe getting drunked. sad.gif

Yes, I miss them! laugh.gif tongue.gif

Nice images from an anti-Ceausescu site... The "Viata Militara" magazine is particulary nice and attracting, with the "Meritul Cultural" Order 2nd Class!!! biggrin.gif

And the photos showing Romanian streets aren't that bad, considering that things hadn't changed very much (appart from Coca-Cola and MacDonald adds laugh.gif ). I could even state that there are more green spaces around the quarters than now! laugh.gif biggrin.gif

-Perhaps someone who know this were well could tell us what each units represent.

-The Protocol Unit is what? A ceremonial guard? These are old traditional constumes, right?

-The Snowsuit units posted earlier are what? Special forces?

-Green and Desert is Army, Blue is Ariforce and White/Black is Navy, correct? How about the others?

Could someone post some pictures and explain what brach of the military each one is? - That way we could learn more about modern romanian army .

Yes, they are part of a battalion used for ceremonial and military honour duties during peacetime. Their uniforms are inspired from the old Romanian uniforms, but they are not traditional costumes as those of the Greek soldiers who guard the Tomb of the Greek Unknown Soldier in Athens.

The official name is Batalion Ceremoniale si Onoruri Militare=Military Ceremonials and Honors Battalion. It is part of the 30th Guard and Protocol Regiment Mihai Vitezul and its tasks include guarding the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Presidency, the Government, the Parliament, the Ministry of Defense and other civilian institutions and taking part in the main military ceremonials, presenting honors to foreign leaders etc. They are well selected to have similar physical characteristics (same height etc). The uniforms are similar to 19th century line regiments.

As a side note, the regiment has its roots in the 1st Tirailleur Battalion, created in 1860.

I suppose Basescu (Bucharest’s mayor) threatened to throw himself under the tanks (not a big loss but he can be entertaining at times) if they bring them to ruin his asphalt.
