British author's book - mandatory for Foreign Ministry staff
Dana Milea

A new book by British author Tom Gallagher, "Balcanii in noul mileniu in umbra razboiului si a pacii" (The Balkans in the New Millennium in the Shadow of War and Peace) was launched yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the project, "Foreign Affairs Ministry's Book of the Month."
The event was attended by the author, a professor of theory of ethnic conflict and peace at Bradford University in the UK, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, Valentin Naumescu, a state secretary at the Foreign Ministry, Victor Neumann from Universitatea de Vest, Horia Barna, director of Humanitas Publishing House and political analyst Emil Hurezeanu.
The head of Romanian diplomacy said the launch is very important, and that the book will be "mandatory reading for colleagues in the ministry," saying it does a great service for the region, offering "important analyses from the perspective of cultural politics."
Speaking about his book, Gallagher pointed out that the Balkans have been the stage of too many experiments and that the level and quality of the EU's involvement in the region will be crucial. "The EU is now the key outside player as far as the status of Bosnia and Kosovo is concerned and the future direction they will take," he said. The book is the author's third volume on the region.
