New names to be added to Victor's list. Thanks, Igor.

By the way, can you look into the registry and solve the "mystery" of the awards to the officers? Did they receive the Order of St. George or the Cross of St. George?

Romanians were also awarded Imperial Russian orders of Saint Vladimir, Saint Anne and Saint Stanislav. Under what conditions were these orders givin to Romanians ? Where the Romanians held to the same criteria award rules given to Czarist officers or were they given these awards under different conditions ?

Regarding the 4th class Saint George crosses in silver awarded to Romanians: I have several Romanian medal bars in my collection with the Saint George 4th class silver crosses on them. All are numbered. Is there a way to research the serial number on the cross to be able to identify 1- if the bar is original and 2- who the bar was awarded to ?

Thr Order Of st. George - only for Officers !!!

Thank you for confirming that.

But were there any instances when officers had received only the Cross of St. George instead of the Order of St. George? What I mean is that they already had the officer rank when they showed bravery on the battlefield and yet they were awarded only the Cross of St. George. I am asking that because in the list posted by Victor there is quite a long list of 14 second lieutenants who have received only the fourth class of the Cross of St. George and it is quite improbable that they were all NCOs during the war (though not impossible).

But if that was the case, I am surprised by the very small number of officers receiving the order (only three) in comparison to the number of soldiers and NCOs receiving the cross. Did the same proportion appear in the Russian army as well?

QUOTE (Victor @ Dec 11 2004, 06:55 PM)
In the list of Romanian soldiers that received the St. George Order for actions in the 1877-78 War, I have found a serg. Ion Dumitrescu from the 1st Rosiori Regiment. He received the 4th class in silver. He very likely is your Jean Demetre.

I am wondering why would the Rumanian source alter the person's actual name appearing in documents to fit current spelling standards?
I see from the document presented by Igor that the spelling was Demetre, not Dumitru, etc.

Col. Dénes

Maybe the names in the Russian document are written with the French spelling (quite common at that time). Hence that source altered the actual name of the person, while the Romanian source gives the correct name.

Order of st George 3d class receive
...
- Prince of Romania Carol

Do you happen to know the date of the award? Did Prince Carol receive the Order of St. Andrew (or other Russian orders) with the same occasion? Thanks.
