Here is an interesting letter from ww2. It belonged to a german that sent the letter home from the front. It's interesting because he is mentioning Romania.

Do you allege that the Russians drank less than the Germans? blink.gif

I personally enjoyed reading it. Thanks for posting it, Claudiu.

I find it interesting that, as late as 28 August 1944, the day the letter was dated, the German soldier who wrote it believed that final victory would come soon.

"...trebuie sa fim bucurosi ca razboiul se apropie de telul sau..."

I don't think that he belived in the final victory any more! I think that it was a speech for the guys from the censorship !!!!

Perhaps, but this is just your assumption.

Personally, if I were on the front lines, the last thing in the world I would care about would be to insert "speeches" for the censors in my letters.

Besides, he had no reason. There was nothing controversial in his letter. If he had made no mention of any "final victory" at all, the letter would have been entirely normal.

I guess we'll never know.

When I read the letter I got the feeling that he meant "... the war approaces its end". Maybe he changed "end" to "purpose" to avoid censorship troubles. I wonder how does it appear in the original German version of the letter as it could also be the result of a faulty or incomplete translation.
