Bucharest then and now

I recognize the same buildings from the other photos, the cinema on the right, 'Cremin', and 'Jawol'.

The Germans are taking a walk and feeling at home.

Interesting to notice how cleen is the city comparing to today,and how good the roads are.
The gipsy that sels carpets wears a tie.
The lights of the Ford are covered for the night camuflege.

The first photo from Alex, starting this topic is on Calea Victoriei with Regala Str. (Campineanu in present).

BTW I think they are romanian soldiers, judging after the helmets.

The soldiers are marching coming from The Royal Palace, down to Palatul Postelor (Post Palace?) and to Casa Centrala a Armatei (Central House of the Army).

The building on the right with all windows broken was called Adriatica (it still exists today, right on the corner where are some B1 TV studios). Also the next building on the right still exists.

I think this photo was taken after 23 aug 1944, in fact, after the german bombardements, because of the broken windows and because on the right it should be The National Theather and it seems to be down.

I attach a prewar photo taken on Calea Victoriei from another angle (If the soldiers would be on the street, they would be on the Victoria, at the corner of Adriatica bldg., facing photographer).

And here are other soldiers, in another war - The Great War - marching on Calea Victoriei in the same place. In fact it was called Piata Teatrului (The Theather Plaza). Only then Adriatica was not built yet.

The National Theather was on the left (where the trees are, not seen in pic) and the building with a pointing roof is Hotel Continental, still there today.

The second photo (with the jeep) puzzles me. Nothing sure yet, but I think it is shot somewhere at Sf. Gheorghe Plaza, on the side with the entrance on Lipscani of the Boulevard.

In the back of the picture I think one could see Creditul Minier bldg. I am still looking for a picture showing the same area.

If the resolution can be higher, so you could see the names of the shops at least we could know if it is in Romania, Bucharest or not. So Alex, please email it to me if you have it in a better reso.

And here's another photo of Bucharest. 20's I think, the Adriatica is not yet built, in it's place is still another bldg (the one with "conservele Stela" and other ads on top.

Hey! Who erased the rest of my pictures here? They are part of the same set and should go together!

At least put some comments that they were taken off, or moved somewhere else, but don't just make them dissepear - they were good pictures!

If you refer to the pictures of the German Army, they were moved quite obviously in the separate topic "Photos of German soldiers in the Balkans", in WW2 in General subforum. Let's keep this one on Bucharest photographs.
