Here is a detailed description, in Romanian: http://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tun_antitanc_...7_mm_model_1936
A summary: It was designed in France by Schneider et Cie company, and was intended to replace Canon de 75 modèle 1897, but the Puteaux design won the contract with the army so the Schneider sold their product in Romania. It was a lightweight piece having only 628 kg, with high mobility in difficult terrain. The shield was small but the wheels could be shifted sideways in order to increase protection. The barrel, 44 calibers in length, had a muzzle break. Field of fire was 15° vertical and 45° horizontal. AP shell weight: 2.3 kg, HE shell: 1.48 kg. Effective range: 1,200 m, max range: 6,700 m. It could penetrate 40mm armor at 500 meters according to Romanian sources, the projectile having a muzzle velocity of 750 m/s. The rate of fire was 18 rounds/min. In Romania the gun was produced at Concordia factory in Ploesti, the only factory in the country at the beginning of war that could produce anti-tank guns. 160 pieces were bought from France and 140 were to be produced under licence. The production started on 26 May 1939 and during the war the production surpassed the number allowed by the license in order to cope with the war needs. In October 1942 the production rate was about 14 pieces per month. The gun was useful in 1941 campaign, but later it proved totally ineffective against T-34 and KV tanks. They remained in use for the entire war and even after, until 1949, when they were replaced with 45 and 57 mm guns of Soviet production. |
