The book was opened very early, almost at the start of the war, on the second of September 1939. Seems like Mr. Heinz was already in the Luftwaffe by then, and there is the rank to prove it.

Dec.43 - March.44 he served with Kampfbeobachterschule I, the Luftwaffe observer school based on the airfield at Thorn. March 44 he went to a Fallschirmjäger examination office (Hauptuntersuchungsstelle des Gen.-Kdos.XI.Flieger-Korps) that proffed he could join the FSJ training programm. March-May.44 he was schooled as Fallschirmjäger at Fallschirmschule Stendal. May.44 he was transferred to the FSJ replacements unit Fallschirm-Jäger-Ers.BTL 5 of the 5th FJ Division. |

When the allied forces landed in the Normandy Jun.44, several battle groups were formed out of this unit, units that were active defending the channel from Nantes to Brest. Schmidt joined the battle group of Oberst Deffner (Kampfgruppe Deffner), till he was Oct.44 transferred to the battle group of Brodowski (Kampfuntergruppe), first defending the city of Campbon (same area) and later on trapped (and defending) in the pocket of St.Nazaire. He stayed in St.Nazaire till the end of the war.

The book is a replacement one, since Mr. Hartkop lost his original one, or perhaps it was destroyed in action. The book was opened in March 1944, when FJR6 was reforming after its exploits in Russia and Italy.

Mr Hartkop joined FJR6 on the 10th of February 1944, coming from a Flak unit, as we will soon see.

Now, the main part - the awards.
First - he was entitled to the sleeve flak profficiency badge - the Tätigkeitsabzechen der Flakartillerie, the cloth arm trade patch for the Flak arm. Afterwards, he went to the Fallschirmschule 2, and obtained his para license. Since there were always delays with the receival of the Para Badge, fresh paras were allowed to wear the Para Badge in Cloth, as shown here in the Soldbuch. FJR6 fought in Normandy on the invasion front, at Carentan, and afterwards at Arnhem and Aachen. Since there are no entries after 6.44, we can safely presume that Mr Hartkop was either KIA, MIA, captured, or simply lost his SB and received a new one (the third). One cannot know these facts without additional documentation, so let's hope for the better for this brave paratrooper. Have an excellent weekend everyone. Cheers, Al |

Gents,
Time for another FJ Soldbuch and the story of its owner... Peter Lipka: This is a very nice soldbuch of a man born on 21.4.1917 in Essen that started his military Career on 1.9.1939 right on time for the polish campaign in the flak regiment 32. His Father died in 1937 when Peter was only 20 Yrs old. After 3 years in the Flak he joined the Stab Company of a "fighting school" probably for administration duties or as a "teacher" for 2 months. He then Joined the FJ training and replacement regiment 1 and will stay with this unit untill his death. With this unit will qualify as a real FJ receiving the FJ badge and Fallschirmschutzenshein. During the invasion in normandy he was sent in the cotentin peninsula to fight the americans landed at UTAH beach and when the American reached the west coast of the cotentin peninsula he got cut off with his unit, elements of 77 ID,709 ID and 243ID. On the 21 6 1944 he was badly wounded from a bullet and taken into the hospital of Cherbourg as the german line were cut off from the americans. On 7 july 1944 he will die in captivityin the same Cherbourg hospital at 13:30 in the afternoon(Cherbourg fell on the 28 June 1944) while looked after german medical officers and he ll be buried in the german cemetery in Orglandes. |
