Which were the differences between the two classes of destroyers in service in the Romanian Navy: M class (Marasti and Marasesti) and R class (Regele Ferdinand and Regina Maria)? Was the displacement the main difference, or it was also the maximum speed, the number/power of the guns, etc?

All four ships had been built in Italy, but the R class was younger than the M class. The M class were built in 1918-19 and the R class in 1928-29. The latter were a little bigger, faster and had a greater range. The R class was also better armed both in terms of naval (5 120 mm guns instead of 4) and AA artillery and in terms of torpedoes. Nevertheless, the M class fared pretty well during the war.

NMS Marasesti and NMS Marasti were built in Italy as torpedo-boat destroyers under the names of Spaviero and Nibio. They arrived in Romania in 1920.
The R-class destroyers, NMS Regina Maria and NMS Regele Ferdinand were built in the same place, at Pattison, Napoli, in 1929. They were built according to a Thornicroft project achieved under Navy Technical Directorate specifications. |

Thanks, both of you.
Does anybody have complete specifications sheets for (all) the four Romanian destroyers? Maybe to be added in the “Navy” section of the site... This post has been edited by Agarici on July 25, 2005 05:27 pm |

The addition of the destroyers was in plan, but it was postponed because I wanted to write a more comprehensive article on their activity. Unfortunately I didn't manage to do it so far.

In 1944 one of the 120 mm gun of R class destroyers were replaced with a 88 mm AA german gun. Its about the gun from the middle of the ship. Obviously, this gun was more usefull for the escort tasks. This post has been edited by Dan Po on March 20, 2006 09:13 am |
