When I was a student in Romania in 1975-1980 I visited Tirgu Mures many times and afterwards I went to Salard, at about 25 km from Toplita, where I was fascinated by a German bunker built on a hill, north of the Mures River. I even found a mortar once!! who built it? how, when? what happened there? History is fascinating and in 1980 I wasn't allowed to know more. Now that the "night" has passed and we can ask, I would like to know. I owe much to the Romanians, because I studied there (zootechnics at Cluj). I salute you and thank you!

I believe Salard in the Red Army sector in September 1944. Since the area had been under Hungarian authority from 1940, I think it is safe to presume the fortification might have been Hungarian. |
