One of the major secondary sources we use for the project I'm working on is Ellis and Cox The World War I Databook. In it there is an indication that in December 1916 the Romanians amalgamated 6 of their divisions because of heavy casualties. These show up as 1/17, 9/19, and 2/5. The first 2 work because the attendant chart shows both the 17th and 19th divisions as being disbanded in December 1916. However 2/5 is a problem. Ellis and Cox show the 2nd division lasting into September 1917 and the 5th all the way to May 1918. If they were amalgamated it had to be for a very short time. Does anyone have any info on what exactly happened and how long the 2/5 amalgamation lasted?

Did you look here:

After the reorganisation, the 2nd Division was part of 1st Army Corps, and the 5th Division part of 3rd Army Corps. In the 1st Army.

At the end of October 1916, the Romanian divisions in Dobruja (2nd, 5th, 19th and 9th) had suffered heavy casualties. The 2nd Division had only 3,000 men remaining. Thus it was decided to form the 2/5th and 9/19th Divisions. I will search to see what I can find about the reforming of the 2nd and 5th Divisions.

The 2/5th Division of brig. general Alexandru Socec was reorganized and reequipped with machine-guns at Buzau. It was again sent to the front in Wallachia on 17 November. During the battle for Bucharest, it received one of the most important missions: to go around the left flank of Group "Kosch" and attack it from behind at Draganesti. The division arrived on 1 December 1916 within several kilometers of Draganesti, but had suffered many casualties and, during the following night, it turned around and retreated towards Bucharest. On 3 December, it was defending the Matei Basarab village, protecting the flank of the 9/19th Division, which had become the main offensive force. A very controversial episode occurred during the fighting. Under powerful artillery bombardment, general Socec considered that his command post and the supply column were too exposed to the strong enemy fire. He ordered their repositioning 2 km to the South. The riders that were sent out with the orders gave the soldiers on the front the impression of a flight. The troops were under attack from three directions and the false news of the commander's retreat were enough to create panic. The soldiers abandoned the battlefield and retreated en-masse towards the Arges River. Socec was unable to regain control of his men. The breach in the front proved to be the last blow to the Romanian plan of saving the capital. In need of a scapegoat, Socec was degraded in front of his troops and sentenced to 5 years in jail in January 1917. In October 1918 he was acquitted and reinstated.

The remains of the 2/5th and 9/19th Divisions were joined with the 21st Division on 10 December 1916.

There was another amalgamated Division that you didn't mention: the 13/14th.

Apart the 13/14th Division, at the end of November 1916 the 10/11th amalgamated Division was created, from the 10th and 11th divisions.
All the composite divisions, 21st (that also included 2/5th and 9/19th ), 1/17th , 10/11th and 13/14th , were disbanded at the end of December 1916, when the reorganization of the army started. The divisions above the 15th were never raised again (except from 1919). In december 1916 the 15th Division, which had a great number of regiments coming from the 8th Division, was re-numbered the 8th.

Thanks to all for this information. I am, as usual, in the debt of the members of this board. Looks like I need to obtain a composite OB chart for the war to help straighten all this out. Anyone know if such a chart exists?
Thanks again,
Rich

Thanks, Imperialist, but not exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you for the information, but obviously if you put this information on in response to my question, I didn't do a very good job of explaining what I'm confused over. My apologies for making you work for nothing. (God, I hate working for nothing tongue.gif ) So everyone hang with me for what I hope is a simple, but longwinded explanation.

For the project that a number of you have helped with our "Bible" is Ellis and Cox
The World War I Data Book. It may be wrong on occasions, but it's what we have and any comments that indicate an error will be passed along to the authors for a revised edition.
They indicate that the various Romanian Division were in existence for specific periods but that many were dropped from the OB list during the war. Below is the list that I've put together from their charts. What I'd like to know is how correct is it?

Divisions existing August 1916-September 1917: 1, 2
Divisions existing August 1916-May 1918: 3, 4, 5, 11, 12
Divisions existing August 1916-May 1918 and re-established November 1918: 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15
Divisions existing August 1916-November 1918 without a break: 9, 10, 1 Cav, 2 Cav
Divisions existing August 1916-December 1916: 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Divisions existing September 1916-December 1916: 21, 22, 23
Divisions existing January-May 1918 and again from October-November 1918: 1 Vanatori, 2 Vanatori

Obviously there are major conflicts with information presented on this board. Although they mention the amalgamation of divisions there are no specifics and 10/11 isn't even mentioned. What I'm looking for is a definative list of what divisions existed and when. Is there such a list?

Thanks again to everyone who has helped so far and again my apologies for not making it clear what I was looking for in the post 2 above.
Rich
