My name is Bogdan.
My grandfather fought on the Eastern front. I do not know to much about his activity in the army. I know that he was wounded and treated in Germany. He also received a 'Virtutea militara' medal.
I would like to know more about this period of his life; and I really don't know where to start. I thought about sending an e-mail to drp@mapn.ro (didn't do it yet). Other then this I have no other real idea. If anyone has done this before pleas tell me all the steps you did.

Well, it seems nobody wishes to answer a question with insufficient data... You have to know a little more about your grandfather - what division did he fight in, where was he wounded (in what battle) etc. Do contact the MApN, do contact ONCE (Oficiul Naţional pentru Cultul Eroilor) and try to come with more concrete facts. Hello, My name is Fleischer and I too have started wondering about my father who was in Romanian Army. He was actually in the mounted artillery. I recall him calling it something like “Skimbash” He had served his two-year military duty but was recalled back to service as the war broke out. His hometown was Brashov and I think his training base was near that. He talked a bit about the fighting on the Russian front and before the last year of the war, went AWOL and joined the German army. Is there a way I can learn more about his unit, or perhaps the action they were involved with.

Hello once again and thank you for your reply. I must admit it was a wonderful surprise to see that perhaps I can learn more about my father and his life in Rumania during the war. Unfortunately he has been dead for over 25 years and only briefly talked about the war and the conditions on the Russian front. I forgot to add that he was a “Sieben Burgen Saxon or better identified as a German from Transylvania near the town of “Honigberg”

I will chat with my mom and see if she has any of his old papers. I recall once seeing a Dienst Buch – or military ID and assignment book that many have more clues. I may also be able to find a picture of him in uniform or part of his outfit. I think once again I saw a group picture of his unit outside their barracks.

I must admit, this is all so exciting learning about some of my heritage. Until stumbling onto this web site I never in my wildest dreams imagined that the Rumanians involvement and sacrifices in WWII where so high.

Thank you once again, and no, I no unfortunately I cannot speak or read Romanian. I can read and speak German though, so if you would be so kind, please translate the message that you sent as a reply.

Seems to me was a member of OT, Luftschutz of Polizei (more likely that). If he was police, 99 % he went to Polizei Schule Iglau-Laon (were almost all Transylvanian volunteers went to).

Hope this clears things a bit. This is based upon the fact that you recall seeing a Dienstbuch.
