Hello Victor, i am trying to further identify pilot Sublocotenent Paul Mogaldea, his unit, and clarify the date of his victory on 25 October 1917 over Marasti. i believe the date stated is by old style calendar. I have a pilot Plutonier Paul Magalea with ESC.N.11 who scored a victory on that same date. i would like to clarify spelling of his name. thank you for kind help. agblume

Like mentioned in the post in this topic, slt. Paul Mogâldea was awarded the Mihai Viteazul Order 3rd class for his deeds. This is the highest war award for Romanian officers. It can't be awarded to NCOs (like a plutonier). The Royal Decree that gave the MV Order to Mogâldea was signed on 9 April 1918. I belive that is before the new calendar was adopted, so it would be 25 October, old style. The decree does not mention the unit. I am sorry, but that's the best I can do.

i would like to thank Victor and Cantacuzino for their kind feedback and photo of ESC.N.11 Plutonier Magalea, with confirmation of his victory on 7 November 1917 (n.s.). i am still confused whether Sublocotenent Paul Mogâldea is a different person. i am unable to find any record that he scored a victory on the same day as Magalea. about ten years ago i was in close contact with Prof. Avram and he provided me with much information, including names of all airmen of this early period. the name of Mogâldea does not appear in any unit rosters, nor was there any mention of him having scored a victory. any additional confirmation as to the identity of Mogâldea and his unit would be most welcome. can anyone help me obtain a copy of the book by Prof. Avram? thank you. agblume

Victor double check your sources. I think it's a mistake with the name. I never heard about pilot name Mogaldea in WWI ( only Mogaldea observer in WWII). Concerning the fight on 7 november (new style) 1917 it's about Sgt. Paul Magalea (not Mogaldea) who shot down one Fokker . For cheking the pilots names in WWI see below the "Brevet" pilot licence number and date. A little off topic: wasn't Mogaldea the name of one of the romanian pilot in ww2?

Like i said it was in WWII one aviation officer ( observer and crew cdt. but not pilot) named Ioan Mogaldea (born in Dobrogea) and also had written one or two books of his war exploits. This post has been edited by Cantacuzino on October 07, 2005 12:01 pm |

Mayby Plutonier Paul Magâlea was raised to officer rank in 1918 and became Slt. Paul Magâlea, awarded with Mihai Viteazul for his deeds. ( Or he married with a General daughter named Mogâldea and took her name and they give birth to a son named Ioan who later in WWII became an aviation observer ) This post has been edited by Cantacuzino on October 10, 2005 11:04 am |

many thanks to everyone for their kind help. i agree with the post by Cantacuzino that Plutonier Paul Magâlea was raised to officer rank in early 1918 and then was able to receive the Ordinul Mihai Viteazul 3rd Class. can anyone help me purchase a copy of the book "Crucile Negre," by Valeriu Avram??? you can contact me at agblume@warchron.com.
