I have an uncle who fought near Iasi in 1944 and died there defending the region against soviet assault. Only what I know is that he was in cavalry unit (cavalerie), and until now I was unable to identify the precise unit designation. Can somebody help me with some infos ?
Thanks a lot. And eternal thanks to our heros. Leo. |

He was in the 5th Motorized Cavalry Division, which was made up of:
6th Motorized Rosiori Regiment 7th Motorized Rosiori Regiment Cuza Voda 8th Motorized Rosiori Regiment 11th Motorized Rosiori Regiment 2nd Motorized Artillery Regiment However, I cannot say in which regiment your uncle was in. Was he acareer officer or was he a reservist? Or was he an elisted man? |

Victor,
Just wondering, was this a typical division in terms of the numbers of regiments it comprised, or was it larger than an average division? Also, approximately what was the number of troops per regiment in this case? Thanks... |

Then the area where he lived could help us identify the regiment.

For organization of the cavalry brigade/division go to the Organization section of the site (http://worldwar2.ro/organizare/?article=10&language=en) On 28 October 1943 the "Law for the organization of the Armed Forces" was promulgated. Two cavalry training divisions were formed: the 1st and 5th. The 1st, 5th and 8th Cavalry Division were going to be transformed first into motorized divisions and then into armoured divisions. The motorized cavalry divisions (1st and 5th) had 4 motorized cavalry regiments, one motorized artillery regiment, 120 mm mortar squadrons, 20 mm AA gun squadrons, 75 mm AT gun squadrons and pioneers. |

If he was from Balti, than he was most likely in the 6th Rosiori Regiment, which was based there until 1940.
