I'm wondering if the Army let him wear a beard for long. There are very few photos with Rumanian soldiers having a beard during W.W. 2... :?

Denes
As I told that foto was taken when he came back. His regiment advanced in Rusia, and where made captive. His bigest pain was to lost his horse. So imagine asoldier in the Rusian winter without comfort. The only water that they had was from the horseshoes marks in the ground. His face was very unjuried from cold and infection. Result : he couldn´t shave That why he wear a beard. But what about his uniform ? Can it give me a clue about where he served, was the cavalry? |

1- rows of oakleaves on a visor cap.
Visor caps with nothing on them, all black bill is for Junior Officers up to Captain in rank. One row of oakleaves is for Senior Officers Major to Colonel. A double row of oakleaves is reserved for Generals. 2- The school for Mechanized Cavalry wore a shoulder sleeve patche insinia on their uniforms. I have seen this in many photographs from the school. However, none of the photos I have seen have a clear image of this insignia. Anyone know what this patch insignia looks like ? |

Vlad - The first uniform of your grandfather looks like he is wearing the Armor Tank Coverall / jumpsuit. Rustic reddish brown in color with front zipper and turned down colar. The wool Field cap and inner shirt are black for armor troops.

I´m sory but I´m not familiarized with this militar term to describe the uniform. When you say JUMPSUIT It means paratropers? And ARMOR TROOPS? What is that ? What I know about him and make me think that he belonged to cavalry, is that he had a horse. Please help me to understand and be patient with my ignorance in this domain. I learn quickly .[/quote] |

Jumpsuit - one piece coverall with zipper front. The same as that of a paratroop. Armor troops, Mechanized troops, Mechanical in the army wore a brown 1 piece uniform when around equipment. A utility suit.

Second photo is a standard Army uniform. Summer Light Weight Cotton of light khaki green or tan in color. No colar patches so probably circa 1943-1945.
