Mihai,
I tried to send you a Private Message but it appears I am unable to send anything. Please contact me by either PM or e-mail if you will. I am interested in discussing your 2nd class Orders of Michael the Brave. ccaudlej@sbcglobal.net |

There is some indication that Carol II may have received the first class of the Order of Michael the Brave much earlier than 1930 when he became the head of the order as King of Romania. According to an article in Puncte cardinale, Prince Nicolae, the brother of Carol II, wrote: "I could not have understood and I think I will never understand the reasons for which [Carol] was decorated by King Ferdinand with the Order of Michael the Brave first class". Unfortunately the note is not dated, but the reference to King Ferdinand indicates an earlier award than Carol's last renunciation to the throne (of 1925). I would guess it had been a WWI award Carol received as next in line to the throne, sometime after the order was founded in 1916. |

I will now cast a shadow of doubt on Carol II's 1st class of the Order of Michael the Brave. Is there any photo showing him wearing the first class of the order? In all the photos I saw he was wearing only the third class of the order. Is it possible that there is an error in Prince Nicolae's note (either his or that of the author quoting him)?

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember seeing the 1st class among Carol II's decorations in the National Military Museum.

I think it would be nice if someone could give it a check during a visit to the museum, as I remember seeing Carol II's uniform only with the insignia of the third class of the order. |

Through High Decree no. 1148 of 6 October 1917, the future king Carol II was awarded the third class of the Order of Michael the Brave.

It's only the third class.
Victor, if I'm not allowed to post pictures from the museum please delete the image. -------------------- ~
