....Tiger tank during battle of Stalingrad:
The photo was taken during summer. Look at their short sleeves. The environment seem to be "civilized" and it looks peaceful. More likely it is a training school for tank crews. The only involvement of one regiment using Tigers during the battle of Stalingrad was during von Manstein's counterattack, when Stalingrad was already sealed off by the Russians. Even during that counterattack, the Tigers were kept in the rear lines. Maybe the Germans were afraid to have them captured by the enemy. |

There was a photo that I will always remeber. I have seen it several years ago in a book (can't rember the title, too bad I didn't have a scanner then) that I had borrowed from the military library. It was from the German Ardennes offensive in 1944, and it was showing a german soldier crouched in the snow, leaning on the massive wheels of an armoured vehicle, probably a Jagdpanther. What was special about this photo, it was giving a feeling of loneliness. The soldier, probably resting, crouched in his coat like a sack, looked insignificant near the armored monster of which only the wheels were visible. From the back, the bayonet hanging at the belt was looking impressive.

More commonly, soldiers and tank crew members (the latter in turns, as some of them must be inside the tank) stayed on the radiator, in the rear of the turret, to warm up. They did that despite of the exhaustion gases surrounding the rear of the tank. |
