42 Infantry Division Organization

I have a question pertaining to the divisional organization at Stalingrad.

Did the division have a light (recon) battalion or just a recon company? Some organizations I have seen show a battalion with a cavalry sqdr and 3 light companies. The organization for a 42 Inf Div on this site shows a recon company. Did this vary?

The 1942 Infantry Division on this site is the official organization of the infantry division as part of the Army reorganization in the winter 1941/42.

However, the divisions that remained on the front during 1942 (1, 2, 4, 10, 18, 19, 20) could not be reorganized as planned, and thus the differences you may find.

The divisions mentioned by Dragos were on the front continously from the winter of 1941/42 or early 1942. They did not have the time to reorganize and reequip.

So 3rd Army had the reorganized divisions while 4th Army had the divisions that remained in the front line.

Indeed, the infantry divisions belonging to 3rd Army at Stalingrad were reorganized and better equipped that the infantry divisions of the 4th Army. Especially the 5, 6 and 13 Infantry Divisions had the best situation, because they were trained under German supervision.
