Hello,
My grandfather, like many others fought in WWII. First he was part of Antonescu's guard, then after it was disbanded he was sent to the front. He was killed in the Baneasa forest after 23 August 1944. It seems there was an aerial bomardment, I do not know exactly if it was American, German or Russian, that it was a big confusion. These things I know from my grandmother. The question: DOes anyone know what happened after 23 August in teh Baneasa forest, what units fought there, who won? PS: nice site, I have just discovered it now! *translated by admin* *In the future please try to respect the forum rules and post in English* |

The unit that did most of the fighting in the forest was the 4th Paratrooper Battalion. It was also the most affected by the USAAF bombardment on 26 August (carried out by 115 B-24Ds).

At Baneasa bridge elements of the Mounted Guard Regiment (Regimentul de garda calare) took part in action.

As replied earlier, the bombers that hit Baneasa forest were part of the US 15th Air Force. |
