Hello,
Can someone provide me a link to a good site where I can find a list/catalog of Romanian medals and orders (both Royal and communist-era medals), with prices (international prices and prices here in Romania), good pictures and a lot of background informations about each medal? Any help would be apreciated. Thanks a lot. |

An illustrated catalogue of Romanian orders and medals (in print or electronic) is a dream for many collectors, but to my knowledge nothing like that exists yet. Some background information on the Romanian decorations you can find in the works below.
- Decoraţii româneşti de război: 1860-1947 by I. Safta, R. Jipa, T. Velter and F. Marinescu is the best reference available now. - Romania - Decoraţii 1859-1991 by S. Catone, N. Şerbănescu and D. Bedivan, while not as comprehensive as the other, contains some information on the communist-era decorations. |

Most medal reference books only show examples with a breif discription about the medal. It would be nice if someone put together a comprehensive book that catalogs all the different medal and order variations, time periods and manufacturers. I think this would increase the intertests in collecting Romanian medals as well as put some historical perspective to the medals. A section for identifying fakes would be difficult. This is an area that has increased recently as with the demand and popularity has increased. Valuations too have steadily increase with more collectors and reference books coming onto the scene. Price for common medals have actually lowered in value as many of these medals have now flooded the market since Romania has opened up. Many Romanian dealers have found Ebay as a source to sell outside the country. As more collectors come into play, prices for these common medals will start to go back up. Pricing rarer orders and regimental badges is strictly based on the public collector demand, whatever price someone is willing to pay. It would be difficult to get a published price except through auction. Even here it is a hit or miss. Some items sell very well and other items do poorly depending on who attends the auction. Bottom line, prices have been fluctuating greatly. Common medals have gone down in price and rarer pieces have gone up in price. It would be very difficult to price out Romanian medals and put it in print as the prices in the book would probably be outdated by the time the book was distributed.
